Local SEO Tips You Need to Implement

If you want to target a specific town, you should have a physical address in its locality.

It is very important to have a consistent physical address in the area you choose to optimize. In addition, the vicinity where your specific address is located should be as close as possible to your targeted area.

Use Google My Business (GMB) the proper way.

Google has made GMB more important, meaning, any business info you include in it also appears on Google+, Google Search and Google Maps. This makes it easier for customers to locate you with whatever device they use.

When you create or further expand your GMB for local SEO, make sure that:

You fill in your GMB completely with accurate, relevant and consistent information

You list an owner-verified GMB location

You mention the specific town and city you are targeting in the GMB landing page title

The GMB’s main categories are consistent with your products that match a wide-ranging search category.

Make sure that the NAP or Name, Address and Phone on your site is the same on GMB.

Aside from your physical address, make sure that the NAP matches the name of your business; this has to be consistent wherever it appears on the web.

In particular, you should use an accurate template for your NAP no matter where they are used – like on your site, Google+ account, GMB or other sites, as well as directory listings.

Make sure your website includes a map to your physical address.

In addition to including contact info on your website, it would also help a lot to incorporate an actual map so people will know your exact location. You can add a code on the contact page of your site to include a map to your location.

Give a distinct web page for every product.

If you offer different products/services, see to it that each has its own webpage, together with specific and relevant details. These pages in particular can be linked from a page that shows the products/services offered in your portfolio.

Use citations properly.

Obtaining citations in major directories across the globe, region and locality is crucial for local SEO. Citations have the ability to boost credibility and build authority for your website, and best of all drive, traffic to your site.

However, if you have no website (it is a must), you can be more visible with the help of local listings.

If you plan on using citations, make sure that:

They are consistent.

They come from good quality websites.

Your business gets mentioned in blog posts and the local newspaper.

You have a lot of domains that are relevant to your locality and industry that talk about your business in a positive manner.

ABC of SEO

A

ALT Tag

Often overlooked but incredibly important, the ALT tag helps tell search engines and visually impaired users the purpose of an image. It’s a great chance to add some important keywords to your code, but keep it sensible. Remember the golden rule of SEO; never make a website for a search engine, make it for your users. Spammed out alt tags will only harm your optimisation, keep it below 4 words and make sure it makes logical sense.

alt=”” src=”../images/logo.gif” />alt=”Something Logical” />

B

Bold Tag?

Never B always STRONG

and (bold and italics) are used purely for visual effect and mean nothing to search engines, where as and are semantics to add emphasis. Google will see something in a tag as more important than something in a tag. However, like everything in SEO it has to be used within reason, making your entire content bold will not help your rankings. The less times you use the tag on a page the more importance the one or two keywords wrapped in a strong tag will have.

C

Cache

This refers to a copy of a website stored on a search engine. Google as well as other search engines will let you view their current cache of a website via a link in their listings. It is important to stay on top of when your site was last cached, changes you make to your site will not get picked up on until the search engine includes them in their cache index.

D

Demographics

“Lenin said that people vote with their feet. Well, that’s what’s happening. They either go, or they don’t go. It’s all politics. It’s all demographics.” – Warren Beatty

Demographics is crucial in any form of marketing, understanding your potential market, their ages, sex, race, income, location etc will help you lead a successful marketing campaign and will result in a higher conversion rate. AdWords and Adcenter, allow you to target PPC ads at searchers who fit amongst a specific demographic, doing this correctly can make the difference between a good PPC campaign and a highly profitable PPC campaign.

E

Everflux

Major search engine indexes are continually updating and refreshing, Google coined this process ‘everflux’. Previous to this Google would update their index roughly one a month and this was referred to as a ‘Google Dance’.

F

Fresh Content

Some SEO firms see adding fresh content as simply updating a page once and again, if your a webmaster and you really want to rank highly in the search engines you will need a consistent flow of original high quality content. Firstly it builds the size of your site and secondly it shows the search engines your content is fresh and that people will want to read it. Low quality, short and unoriginal content will not help and will only jeopardise your rankings.

G

Google

Google truly is the key player in the search engine world, it has revolutionised the internet and how people use it. Google started as a brainchild of two Stanford University students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998.

Now it has ventured into marketing, the browser wars, phones and online software development.

H

Headings

Where’s your heading at? Use headings accurately to structure your content, improve readability and transmit your site’s message. Make sure you get your important phrases in, but don’t start cramming. Analyse the importance of each phrase and fit with the appropriate heading,

H1 being the most important and H6 being the least. You don’t need to use all 6 on one page, just as many as you wish, also try and keep them in order so H1 first and H2 second. Using more than one H1 will take away from the importance of the tag, so only use it once or twice and make sure it is well written. I

Internal Linking

This refers to the process of linking to other pages on the same site, it can help users navigate the site and enable search engines to quickly find and crawl pages, which may otherwise not be linked in the navigation or footer. However, this is commonly misunderstood and a lot of SEO companies see the need to link each of their keywords, this isn’t necessary and it will only water down the importance of other links on the page and confuse your users.

J

Javascript

Javascript is a client side scripting language, which is embedded into HTML to add more dynamic features to a website. Although Javascript itself isn’t indexed by search engines the HTML it controls is. So with the rise of javascript libraries including jQuery and Mootools, web developers are now able to add more interactivity and animation to their sites without using Flash.

K

Keywords, Keywords, Keywords

* Why have you chosen them?

* Are they relevant?

* How many people are competing for them?

* How many people are searching for them?

* How much is your competition spending on them?

Just a few questions you really need to be asking yourself at the start of your optimisation campaign. We have attached a few helpful links below to help you on your way to prosperous keyword research.

L

Link Building

Link building, when performed correctly is the process of gathering high quality links from around the web, which in hand show to the search engines that the site being optimised is authoritative, relevant, and trustworthy.

A few tips to get you on your way..

* Build high quality content, get high quality links.

* Be creative with your link building, think of new ways to gain high quality links, competitions, social bookmarking, april fools etc.

* More links doesn’t mean better links; it’s all about quality, not quantity!

* This is especially true for a new site, you need to ensure your first set of links are from high quality sites, if you plan on getting to page one anytime soon.

* Dmoz, although this has became a highly debatable subject in SEO over the last 6 months, Dmoz is still very much link worthy and authoritative.

* Never, ever, EVER use directory submission software or companies.

There are many more examples and we aim to cover this subject in much more detail in a new post during our SEO season. M

Meta Tags

Meta tags appear in the section of an html document and were a way of helping search engines analyse the content of your site.

Some of the Meta Tags include:

* Meta Description

* Meta Keywords

* Meta Distribution

* Meta Author

* Meta Language

All but the first (meta description) are not worth the time they take to implement into a site. Meta tags are no longer seen as a worthwhile SEO technique and will make no difference to your rankings. We have a slightly controversial view on these, however from experience we can honestly say that only the Meta description tag can help an optimisation campaign. And that is purely to do with the fact that it appears in your listing under your title in the major search engines. Use it to gain searcher’s attention and give them a reason to click through, mention your special offers, pricing, services etc.

N

NoFollow

Nofollow is a link attribute used to prevent a link from passing any link authority (PageRank, age etc) and is commonly used on user generated sites, such as blogs and forums. It was introduced by Google as a way to cut down on blog comment spamming. However, some blogs chose to remove this attribute and chose to reward their reader with a link back if they take the time to comment, this referred to a ‘DoFollow’.

The nofollow link attribute looks like this:

rel=”nofollow”

O

Organic Search Results

Most major search engine listings comprise of paid ads and unpaid listings. The unpaid listings are formed using the search engine’s algorithm and are called the organic search results. The organic search listings are selected by relevancy, link data, domain name and arguably age. Typically these are more popular than paid ads, hence why they appear on the left hand side and have more space compared to the paid adverts. Users also tend to see them as a more reliable and relevant source, meaning they have a higher click through rate. However, to appear on page one in the organic search results you will either need a high understanding SEO or a reliable firm.

P

PageRank

PageRank is Google’s attempted scale at measuring a web documents importance based on its link capital.

Google describing PageRank

“PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages ‘important’.”

The PageRank formula is:

PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + … + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))

* PR= PageRank

* d= dampening factor (~0.85)

* c = number of links on the page

PR(T1)/C(T1) = PageRank of page 1 divided by the total number of links on page 1, (transferred PageRank) For any given page A the PageRank PR(A) is equal to the sum of the parsed partial PageRank given from each page pointing at it times by the dampening factor plus one minus the dampening factor.

A variation of Google’s PageRank appears in their toolbar, this is often referred to as ‘Toolbar PageRank’ and ranges from 1 to 10 (10 being the best), Google has yet to disclose any kind of precise info of how they determine a Toolbar PageRank value, it also updates periodically, on average once every 3 months.

Q

Quality Links

These are the links you need to be aiming to achieve to start ranking in the search engines.

A trusted link can be broken down into the following categories.

* Relevance – The more relevant the link the more power it has, if you were optimising a veterinary website, links from internet marketing sites wouldn’t carry as much strength as links from somewhere like the RSPCA or another veterinary clinic.

* Trusted source – Authoritative links are the best kind of links. If you can build links from government or educational site you will have your foot in the door. However, this is no easy task, the best way to gain these kind of links is to be creative and think on your feet. See if your local council has any kind of local business directory.

* Age – Search engines tend to trust links from well-established sites over new websites.

* Amount of Links – The harder it is to gain a link the more value that link will carry and the less likely that your competitors will be able to get a link off of the same site. Take into account the amount of external links on that page, that’s one of the best ways to judge the strength of a link.

R

Reciprocal Links

This is where websites agree to trade links with one another to try and build a false authority. They made also use 3 way linking or other low quality link building schemes to try and trick the search engines. Overall this kind of link building is not recommended especially if the site you are trading links with isn’t relevant to your industry. Google will pick up on the fact that it is reciprocal and mark the link as a low quality link. However, It is worth considering developing a resources page where you can list useful websites and in case an opportunity comes along to trade with an authoritative and relevant website, you will have somewhere to place their link without spamming your homepage or any other important pages.

S

SERP

This is one of the SEO top buzzwords, SERP simply means Search Engine Ranking Position and refers to where your site is currently positioned in a search engine. You will hear this thrown around a lot in the SEO playground and you don’t want to look like the dumb kid, pretending to know what it means. It can be used in the following contexts.

“I’m not sure what happened to my SERP’s after I used that directory submission service, I have fallen 10 pages.”

T

Title Tag

Experts agree, us included, that this is the most heavily weighed piece of on-site optimisation.

Here are some points to help you on the way to writing a search engine and user friendly title for each page.

* Uniqueness – Each page title needs to unique for that page, do not have the same title for any two pages.

* Length – Try to keep it below 70 characters, anything over that will not only look messy but it will also get ignored by the search engines.

* Logical and Descriptive – Sum up your site and try to get your most important keywords in, however DO NOT spam this, it appears in the search engine listings and something like ‘web design, website design, web optimisation, search engine optimisation, SJL’ will not only get ranked lowly by Google it will also lower your click-through rate. We would recommend something along the lines of ‘Web Design & Search Engine Optimisation Specialists | SJL Web Design’.

U Usability

You may think usability and SEO are two completely different things, but getting visitors to your sites is only half the battle, the other half is getting those conversions. If your site is complicated and your users can’t find their way around, the whole point of optimising will become useless, because they will just leave and you will have a rocket high bounce rate.

So take into account the usability of your site, ask people who have never used it before just to browse it in front of you, watch them carefully, but try not to put them off. See if they become confused and take notes on where they experience problems and what could be done to improve them. If they can’t find things like a link to your contact page in less than 10 seconds your site may be losing you potential enquiries.

V

Viral Marketing

Apart from sounding like some kind of allergic reaction to a bad marketing campaign, viral marketing is an effective way of promoting your brand identity and increasing visitors to your website. Channels for viral marketing include emails, YouTube and simply enough word of mouth.

W

WordPress

WordPress is a popular blogging platform created by Matt Mullenweg in 2003. Installing and maintaining a blog is great way to build a transparency for your business and forms a basis for trust between client and company. It also helps by adding a source of fresh content, which will help your site improve in the search engines. WordPress is easy to manage and with the abundant amount plugins and templates available it is highly recommended by us at SJL.

X

XHTML (Extensible HyperText Markup Language)

XHTML is a markup language that has the same depth of expression as HTML, but also conforms to the XML syntax. XHTML along with CSS has dramatically changed the way we build websites, if you are serious about appearing high in the search engines it is worth taking the time to get the coding right, even if it means hiring someone to do it for you. It may be tempting just to drop into tables or even just use the slice tool on photoshop or fireworks, however this is becoming increasingly outdated and you will have to do twice the work to get anywhere in the search engines.

Y

Yahoo!

We saw yahoo rise to fame during the dot-com bubble of the early 00’s. It was formed by Jerry Yang and David Filo in 1994, who were also Stanford University students like Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of Google. During the last 7 years we have seen Yahoo fall behind Google as the world’s most favorite search engine. Nowadays, Yahoo is heavily in the shadows of Google and its fate has been hanging in the balance throughout 2008, with multiple failed acquisition attempts by Microsoft.

Z

Zeitgeist

Well sorry, I guess. This is the best we could come up with; Z isn’t one of the easiest letters to put SEO terms to. If you can think of anything better please drop us a comment below and we will consider adding it.

Anyway, Zeitgeist is one of Google’s tools for analysing search trends over time, split by country. It is describe by Google as providing ‘search patterns, trends, and surprises’. It can be a good tool for extensive keyword research and we applaud for being with the letter Z.

It is pronounced ‘tsIt-“gIst, ‘zIt’ if that helps and it means ‘the general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era.’

SEO Tips to Get Your Website to the Top of Search Engines

When it comes to the success of digital marketing and finding new customers via the web, keyword optimization is one of the most important tools you can bet on. Keyword optimization or keyword research is the act of researching, analysing and selecting the best word or concept of great significance to your product, services or campaign in order to target and drive traffic from search engines such as Google to your website and other digital platforms.

Getting your website or blog on the first page of search engines can be a daunting task if you do not understand the fundamentals of optimization. Although this tutorial is not guaranteeing you the first place in major search engines, it does point out what one needs to do to be in the Search Engine Optimization game.

It is much easier than you think and this article is to guide, help and provide you with the basic and key for successful search engine optimization:

Step 1. Choose the right keywords

It is tough to be the best at everything and that includes Keyword Optimization. The first step of reaching the top of search results is identifying the right keywords. It can either be a single or multiple words or entire phrases. As you might already be aware of, most searches on the internet are made in the form of a question. Therefore, before you start writing down the keywords, you need to decide which keywords you want to focus on. These are the words people would type into the search engines in order to find your page, blog, website or product.

It is very essential that the word you choose as the keyword is broad enough for lot of people to search for on the internet, but narrow enough that you have a decent chance of getting a high search rank for it on the search engines and results.

For example, the word “shoe” is way too general. However, “Where can I find cheap shoes online” is a pretty good one. Similarly, the word “Europe” is way too general and Wiki sites will normally dominate these top spots. So, “the best holiday destination in Europe” is a much better phrase to focus on.

Here are my top tips for choosing the right Keywords:

1. Start with customers

Think about who your target audience or customers are. What are they likely to type into the search bar when they are looking for answers where your services can help them? Why not ask existing customers what they would search for?

2. Weigh up the competition

Although it is important for you to choose words that many of your target audience might be typing into search engines, they should not be words that bigger companies with the most muscles and bigger budget will compete for.

3. Use Google tools

Guess not only. Google has several good tools which can aid you find what is popular to search.

On Google Trends, a public web facility based on Google Search engine, shows how often a particular search-term is entered relative to the total search-volume across various regions of the world, and in various languages including a list of popular searches. You can also enter keywords and see how popular they are, compared with other phrases and ideas on similar terms – in order to choose the one that most are looking for.

You can also find keywords using Google’s ad tool AdWords. You do not necessary have to advertise, you can just create an account and select using the “Keyword Planner” under the “Tools” menu.

Step 2. Customise Your Content

Once you have successfully chosen your keywords, there are a few other things you need to do in order get your site ranked high on search engines. One of such things is content creation. You have to create and distribute relevant and valuable content (such as speech, writing, photograph or any of the various arts) that attracts and engages your well-defined target audience. Content marketing helps us to attract new customers and build loyalty with existing customers.

For existing customers, this could also mean they take part of the relevant content that creates additional sales by learning more about your offer, and is more expensive products/ services than they have done previously. The following are few tips to consider during content creation:

1. Working actively with texts

Use keywords in the title and preamble of all the pages. Also, include the keywords in the body, the much higher up it is in the text, the better it is for your ranking.

However, be careful not to use your keywords too much. Google may interpret your site as a nonsense page which is only trying to attract traffic and you go down in search results. A rule of thumb is that your content should feel natural and interesting. Which of course is also important for your visitors.

2. Do not forget your photos!

Rename even your photos with your relevant keywords. This will make it possible for search engines index them and you can get hit even in image search. If you have the opportunity to enter an alternative text for each image, do not let go of such an opportunity.

Step 3. Get visits and links from others

The most important thing for search engines is to deliver good and relevant results, remember that’s their primary business. Therefore, priority is given to websites that Search engines deems others rate high or think is good. An example is sites with links and many visitors who stay long to engage with the site. Therefore, this is really important to:

1. Make sure to get a lot of visits to the page

Ask family and friends to visit your website. Get the link or URL out there as often as possible, for example, you make a video, put it up on YouTube and the links there – but incorporate all the content on your site and link to it there.

2. Ask others to link to your site

Ask friends, business partners or customers to link to you, perhaps in exchange for a link back or share interesting tips in your field and let others get put up pieces of contents with a link to you.

3. Share your site on social media

Sharing your website and contents on social media (not forgetting Google+ Google for obvious reasons) is extremely important. It can provide visits to the website, more traffic, attention and higher rankings

4. Get visitors to share

Get others to share your site and contents on social media, using “share” buttons. AddThis is a one of the free tools allows you to instantly share or bookmark pages with one easy-to-use tool. AddThis can also get statistics on how much your content is shared.

Step 4. Revise the technical

Even how your site is built technically is important for your rankings. Here are some things you can do:

1. Use Google Webmaster Tools (Now Google Search Console)

The Google Search Console (aka Google webmaster) is an amazing tool which offers many tools that will aid you to thoroughly analyse your site. From this analysis, you can work on problem areas to make your site rank better on Search engines especially Google

2. Make Your Site Mobile Friendly,

With a good percentage of the world’s population owning mobile devices these days, it makes sense to make sure that your site is mobile friendly. Mobile users also expects good mobile experience when they visit site.

If your site is not mobile friendly, it may rank lower in searches from mobile phones. Google recently Google released a significant new mobile-friendly ranking algorithm that’s designed to give a boost to mobile-friendly pages in Google’s mobile search results, therefore you can’t go wrong with this offer.

3. Make sure the page is fast

A site that takes a long time to load will rank lower on search engines. Google has indicated in the past that site and page speeds is one of the signals used by its algorithm to rank pages.

Page speed is also important to user experience, the slower your site/page speed the more likely you will have high bounce rate and lower average time on your site. Some of the great tools which can help you with your site speed is Google Pagespeed Insights and GTmetrix. This are tools that empowers you to make decisions that increase the performance of your website.

Step 5. Use Web Analytics Tools

Use analytics to measure the outcome of your efforts or to determine which areas of your site are doing well. Google Analytics offers free and enterprise analytics tools to measure website, app, digital and offline data to gain customer insights.

Example: Google Analytics enables you to track the visitors to your store, and generates reports that will help you with your marketing.

Under the “acquisition” in Google Analytics select “all traffic” -> “Channels” -> “organic search” so you can under the “keyword” to see which keywords drive the most traffic and the “source” which search engine. Using Google webmaster tools, you have access to them in Google Analytics under “acquisitions” -> “search engine optimization”.

Step 6. Use Google AdWords

Business regardless of size, wants to be found on the first page of Google. Getting seen by customers at the exact time they are looking for your information, products, services, deals or location is intent marketing (marketing based on someone intending to find your products), and it’s profitable.

Many businesses use Google AdWords to archive these by creating highly effective advertising campaigns to market their products and services, drive traffic to their website, and ultimately, increase sales.

I hope this article has given you an in-depth view of keyword optimization and you find one or more of the above tips useful.

Changes We Are Going to Experience in the SEO World in 2017

“A year can change a lot” – something very truly said. And when it comes to a world where change is occurring every other minute we need to scrutinize and review what all things needs to be addressed in order to keep moving. The world of SEO continues to change at lightning speed. SEO value is increasing everyday so there’s a high demand to figure out and rethink optimization strategies. For better optimization of strategies we need to be aware of the changes we are going to encounter in the coming time. Here are some important changes that we’ll be experiencing some time soon:

MOBILE SCREEN OPTIMIZATION

We have entered in the third screen world. The first screen involved big room size computers fashioned by Charles Babbage in 1990’s, then came in desktop screens, what we refer to as Personal computers (PCs) and now we have entered into the world where we opt for mbile phone screens for anything and everything and all this proactively works for creating a new Mobile ecosystem. So this requires to kick off on creating responsive mobile websites.

Statistical data and Facts:

• 95% smartphone users put location-based site links.

• Huge traffic can be drawn to mobile friendly sites as more than 1.5 billion users use mobiles instead of any other screen.

• A good UI (user interface) the engages good amount of prospect’s for longer period of time.

• 15% of all Internet traffic is mobile traffic, globally. (Source: Newtarget. com)

• 70% online action within an hour comes from Mobile searches. (Source: Socialmediatoday. com)

Social Media

SEO usually puts all the keywords people and more specifically targeted audience are inquiring for. Your audience is no longer in one place. People use other mediums to communicate their requirements, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Discussion panels or forums such as Yahoo answers, Quora etc. and directly browse on web, now the trend has changed and is more on phones. Keeping this in mind, plenty of brands has grown mobile-friendly in 2015. Social media is all about building a brand and spreading awareness about the prospects. To increase your ranking in Google search you need to have good reputation on social media that implies good network and active presence on social sites. That acts as a helping hand in having a great SEO rank.

Becoming more available or Real time is the key i. e. Audio Input to Search is a preferred mode

Nowadays, people prefer audio search instead of typing keywords for search just because of its convenience factor, specially when someone is driving or is engaged in multitasking. Almost all mobile devices have a voice search function. With audio search having so much of appealing power, most of the software companies, nowadays, focuses on audio search interface. Some like Microsoft, Google, and Apple have launched their own versions of advanced voice-responsive assistants – Cortana, Google Now and Siri, respectively. Even ‘Domino’s Pizza’ has a ‘voice-ordering feature. Allo, Whatsapp, and many more. However,

1. Long tail Keywords: When people carrying out with audio search they are more likely to ask questions like why to…? How to? When to? etc. these sentences come under long tail keywords category.

2. Know your Prospects: It’s always beneficial to use those keywords your target audience is searching for. Hence being aware of the keywords and usage of long tail keywords is a gateway to success and in real time could be an added advantage to it.

BACKLINKING AND INTERNAL LINKING IS ALWAYS IN

Backlinking or internal linking shall help you in engaging the right prospect who has come to your website. It’s not a new SEO technique but a very important one to keep the customer engaged once he has shown his interest.

INFOGRAPHICS:

1. USE ANIMATED DATA instead of text content: Content having animation pictures with tag lines is more likely to be preferred over text as its more user engaging.

2. USE SLIDER INSTEAD OF TEXT CONTENT: A Slider is considered to be a quick way to deliver an overview about a website to the visitors and in a more effective manner than just an image. Helps user to understand without putting in much effort.

3. SMALL VIDEO: A website named http://www.vimeo.com/ and many others help you create and share videos that furnishes and delivers your content in a more effective manner. Small videos would be like cherry on the cake.

To Learn About SEO, Think of Your ABCs

I am often asked what SEO is, what it isn’t, and what’s one thing my clients can do to help their SEO. As you will see Search Engine Optimization is not just one thing that will or won’t keep your site from reaching the coveted first page of Google. I’ll try to cover a good deal of what contributes to a site’s Search Engine Optimization.

Ascertain competitors inbound links

Often by researching your competitors, you can find where their inbound links are coming from and, advertise/promote yourself at those exact links if applicable. While you are at their site, check out their keywords – you can maybe get ideas as to what keywords/phrases they are using that you may not have considered.

Blog

I can’t say enough about blogs and the effectiveness of blogging! They offer credibility to your site and your knowledge of your product/service/industry, they let your customer know you care enough to share this information with them, they promote two-way conversation by allowing visitor comments; then you comment on their comments, they allow for more opportunities for your website/keywords to be found.

Content

* Body text, titles and headings (using appropriate CSS tags) and body copy should support and reiterate rich keywords, and be unique to each page

* Bold keywords within the body copy

* Sites containing less than 2,500 words can be penalized by search engines

* Utilize keywords in your H1 text (Headings)

Domain Name

Purchase your domain name for long periods of time. Search engines see that as a stable, notable site. Many spam or adult sites are “here today, gone tomorrow” and are therefore not ranked as high with search engines.

Also, a domain name with a name bearing your industry is much more effective. For example: instead of choosing “JoesStore.com”, select “JoesShoes.com” This is much more descriptive for the search engines. The downfall of this is that many good domain names are often hard to find or come with a high price tag and sometimes you are left with something that isn’t your first choice.

Email Marketing

Each time I send out an email marketing campaign, I receive calls from customers. Not just one call, but several – mostly that same day! Talk about great return on investment! This is because when you deliver an effective email campaign, you are keeping that communication open with your clients and reminding them that you are there for them. But probably the most important feature of email marketing is getting clients to “hit” your site. Link articles and other important information back to the pages on your site.

Feeds

RSS Feeds are quickly becoming an industry standard for potential clients to subscribe to your blog and being notified when new content is posted. Feeds bring more hits back to your site as well.

Google

The name is synonymous with web ingenuity.

* Use Google Analytics to check visitor trending such as, keyword usage and adjust accordingly. Check ROI immediately by seeing visitors coming from referring sites, create a traffic funnel for how you want clients to navigate through your site, and MUCH more.

* Create a free Google Local Ad

* Google Webmaster Tools are a great way to see how often your site is being indexed, if a Sitemap has been uploaded, number of inbound links and more.

Honor thy Press Release…

by submitting them to PR Directories. Worthwhile news can be shared with others and offer more opportunities for inbound linking and others to find your site.

Indexing

In order for your site to rank well in search results pages, it’s important to make sure that Google can crawl and index your site correctly. Uploading a Sitemap (not a visitor site map) to Google and Yahoo is particularly helpful.

Just say no to SEO killers

* Don’t use Flash, frames or DHTML on your site

* Don’t use images on your site for navigation, buttons or important information – search engines can’t “see” images.

* Don’t use tables on your site

* Too many graphics, not enough content

Keyword Analysis

Focus on high-traffic, highly-relevant keywords. Give the search engines a few days to access your content and re-check your ranking based upon this. Tweek and refine as needed.

Links

* Make sure links are representative of what they pertain to, as search engines pick up on links as being an important part of your site. For example, a link to a continuation of an article, instead of click “here” to read that article. Say something which is more descriptive for the search engine spiders to read, have it say “building valid links.”

* Periodically check for non-functioning or broken internal and external links. There are many free link checkers out there.

* Keeping the number of links per page under 100.

* Don’t belong to a weblink or link ring. They don’t work.

Meta Content

* Include meta-tags and keywords relative to page content

* Titles and headings should support and reiterate keywords, and be unique to each page.

* Don’t leave out or duplicate the title, description or keywords as search engines rely on these to “read” unique content on your site. The title is one of the most important things that Google and other search engines utilize when evaluating page content.

* Keep descriptions, title and keywords to the specs below as specified by major search engines:

Title: max 70 characters

Description: no more than 150 characters

Keywords: 10 words/phrases per page is a good amount

Newness

Search engines are increasingly considering the age the site and how long the domain is registered for. To help this, register your domain for as long as you can (to let search engines know you plan on sticking around) and get an aggressive SEO program in place.

On-Page SEO, Off-Page SEO

On-Page SEO pertains to the actual content (keywords, meta information, to increase searches) in/on the website. Approximately 25% of visits are based on this content.

Off-Page SEO pertains to driving traffic to site through linking (via social media, RSS reeds, directories, etc). Approximately 75% of visits are based on (inbound) links.

Page Rank

Google ranks websites based on how “valuable” a website is. Google relies upon the nature of the web and its vast linking structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value.

Having a higher page rank equates to higher probability of being at the top of searches. Links are the basis for page rank – those sites that are less known is because they aren’t as important and have few people linking to them. Those sites with thousands of inbound links, Google sees as being a worthwhile site.

Quantity of Inbound Links

Don’t fall prey to the link networks, or link webrings; nor ever pay anyone that promises to bring you links.

Repeat Visits (encourage)

# Use at least one conversion form to get leads (keep the form short and sweet)

# Increase hits back to your site by doing regular email/eNewsletter marketing campaigns

# Add a “bookmark this page” to your site so customers can easily come back

# Add an “email this page to a friend” link to your site

# Your website address should be printed on all business and marketing items, and also your email signature

# Start a blog – this helps in many ways: keeps the communication open between you and your visitors if you allow comments, search engines will index (and rank) your site higher when you keep uploading new content, shows potential customers that you care about their interests, offers more opportunity for search engines (and customers) to find you.

# Email marketing with links back to articles continued at your site.

# Keep a “running article” going on the site. For example, I have an article that is kept current with upcoming contests for designers and photographers. It’s a great way to get repeat visits.

Submit articles to directories and bookmarking sites

This ensures your website carries an extensive web presence outside of your own website. Furthermore it will allow more opportunities for prospects to find your company by adding greater visibility for your business.

Twitter, Technorati and the entire Social Media realm

Social media, Bookmarking, Article Submissions, Social Networking can and should be utilized to its maximum potential to market your business.

URL

Put keywords or phrases in the URL via the folder/directory structure or the HTML page name. Again, this offers more opportunities for search engines finding keywords.

Be sure to print your URL on ALL marketing materials you have (business cards, signage, brochures, etc), and in your email signature – MANY people use this link.

Valid or Quality Links

The more quality inbound links you have coming to your site, the higher your Google page rank will be.

Writing on forums, Q&A’s and other blogs

Many people will click on a forum signature in response to someone’s question. Be sure to take this opportunity when posting to well traveled forums, blogs and Q&A forums to have a “signature” that states your name and URL to your business.

XHTML

Utilizing such technologies as XHTML, CSS and PHP, ensures less page errors, faster loading times for your visitors and also eliminate the need for tables which can cause problems with search engines and accessibility.

XHTML limits the code size naturally and you end up with being simple to crawl for Google and other bots.

Yahoo, Google, MSN – Submit your URL

Though Google boasts the most searches per day, Yahoo! and MSN are also very well traveled. Regularly check your standing in popular search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN) using keywords potential clients would be using to find your site.

Zap Spam – simple web guidelines from Google:

* Don’t hide keywords on your pages or use too many in the metatags; search engines can see this as a potential spam website and won’t index it.

* Don’t use hidden text or hidden links

* Don’t load pages with irrelevant keywords

* Don’t create multiple pages, subdomains or domains with duplicate content

* Don’t use doorway pages.

Small Business SEO Tips and Tricks

Before getting into tips and tricks, here is some background information about SEO for small business owners.

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is a strategy in web development or design that usually includes post-design promotional activity intended to enhance recognition of a site by search engines. The goal is having your small business website appear on or close to page one in Google, Yahoo, MSN, and the other major search engines. The result, especially being listed #1 on page one, may mean more traffic driven to your website with the ultimate goal of visitors converted to buying customers.

SEO may also mean a person, or Search Engine Optimizer, who is a direct employee or outside contractor with the responsibility of adjusting your small business website programming code, site content, and promotional activities to achieve page one with search engines. Like any profession, the performance level may vary widely from one to another.

Brick and mortar small business owners often launch a new website and expect the site to take over as the front line of marketing their product or service. This can be a mistake. Others just want to enhance their image by showing sophistication with a www domain that presents more content than will fit on a business card or brochure.

The first group wants traffic driven to their site, yet few small business owners truly understand Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, so some fall victim to persons offering SEO services for a fee. For the second group, just being online with a website that never changes meets their expectations, and they realize success depends on direct customer contact and marketing. A third group is similar to this last group, except they expect that just having a website will magically bring instant fortunes.

If you didn’t guess by now, there are no tricks to search engine optimization. Tips for SEO success should be based on proven techniques with long term positive results. Tricks that try to manipulate results by deceptive means, may succeed short term but will eventually fail.

Search engine algorithms for establishing ranking like Google’s PageRank are secret. The best one can do is guess how and why they change by tracking each quarterly update. Most watchers of PageRank, or PR for short, are trying to unravel what Google finds important and then manipulate their strategy to improve their ranking in search results. That could be a mistake. If adjusting strategy means manipulating what some think is important, too often they resort to deceptive means with short term gains.

I’ve written many times that deceptive practices will backfire. You will be punished. If you track PR, or follow the advice of SEO gurus, then you’ve heard the cliche “Content is King”. My position continues to be that the secret to search engine optimization is designing sites for visitors first, and then adding original quality content often to get noticed by people, and search engines.

“Content is King” needs to be changed to “Original Quality Content is King”. Traffic is meaningless if visitors don’t stick around long enough to be converted to paying customers. I believe that the tweaking of algorithms in 2007 and the downward shift in overall PR for so many sites is more than a temporary adjustment. Furthermore, I do not believe that Google is punishing website owners who provide original quality content. Instead, I believe that millions of websites set up and tweaked just to trick search engines are being caught and punished, and the PR scale in 2007 has shifted downward for quality site owners to fill in that void and redefine the PageRank range.

Small business website owners need to understand best practice SEO strategies. Here’s some search engine optimization advice that I published on my website in 2007. First is the main course from my menu to feed search engines that used an analogy comparing search engines to restaurants. Following that list are practices to avoid from that same article on my site.

Positive Search Engine Optimization practices to consider:

1. Keywords in the Page Title

2. Keywords in the H Tags

3. The Age of Your WWW Domain

4. The Size of Your Website

5. Backlinks (inbound links to your pages)

6. Keywords in Text Links

7. High Quality, Original Content

Negative or deceptive SEO practices you should avoid:

1. Do not have affiliate only advertising pages. You need original content.

2. Do not have over optimized pages. It won’t help SEO and may confuse your visitors.

3. Do not have link schemes, inbound or outbound. Deceptive practices will backfire.

4. Do not have identical content hosted on two separate domains (mirror sites).

5. Do not have plagiarized content. It is illegal, and search engines can tell.

6. Do not have foul language as in cursing, or content that is hateful or racist.

In conclusion, continue to evaluate your small business website strategy for SEO. Take advantage of the best practices and avoid the negative or deceptive methods, and you can succeed. The majority of small business entrepreneurs service a local market, so the ranking of your pages compared to the world could mean that very high PageRank is impossible. By following the tips given here, you may have enough to edge out your local competition, and that’s probably all that matters.

How Google Updates Affect Your SEO Campaign

Google updates its algorithms quite often. In fact, if we visit Google’s algorithm update history, it is easy to note they roll out new updates multiple times a month, and several times a year. Some updates include simple changes in the aesthetics of the search results page, whereas others include the introduction of new ranking factors.

We all know performing SEO on a website is continuous work, a routine. Actions made today will only reflect on your traffic down the road, and it takes patience and persistence to continue.

However:

Things out of our control can happen and ruin all the methodical and daily work we’ve done for our website’s SEO: the drastic changes in Google’s algorithm!

Does That Mean I Should Change My SEO Strategy Every Time Google Releases a New Algorithm Update?

While it is good to pay attention to these updates, you shouldn’t worry about having to change your entire SEO campaign.

Google Algorithm updates represent new ranking opportunities and criteria that SEOs should comply with, which is why SEO is a continuous strategy.

So, Why Does Google Update Its Algorithms So Frequently?

Google constantly releases algorithm updates in order to maintain its superb online advertising and search services. Several things can go wrong when running a business online, causing it to shut doors unexpectedly.

When this happens to a brick-and-mortar store, it is easy to see they have officially closed down; however, how can you tell if an online business is still operating or not?

That’s where “Bots” come in!

Google has “crawling robots” that go around discovering and inspecting websites 24/7. If Googlebots can’t get to your website, it will never be indexed. This means if Google can’t see your website content, then it won’t rank your website either.

You can avoid all this stress by performing technical SEO strategies to ensure your website is visible to crawler Bots, loads at fast speed, and depicts a true representation of your brand image.

Once your website is discoverable, Bots will analyze the layout and structure of your business, indicating how Google should be evaluating and ranking your website. Clues such as breadcrumbs, structured markup and sitemap can help guide the Bots through your content, pointing out the most important pages and blocking the ones Google shouldn’t consider.

Why Are Google Algorithm Updates Necessary?

What makes Google better than Bing, among other search engines, is the speed, accuracy and quality of the content it provides in its search results page.

Think about it:

If the search results page displayed links to websites that had little to do with what you actually searched for, or if it took too long to display it results, wouldn’t you try a different service?

We would!

That being said, Google is looking for the best content available online, so it is safe to say that “content is king”! Quality content must be helpful, informational, readable and digestible – not just fluff.

The general rule of thumb here is:

“the better the content, the higher are the chances it will rank on the first page of search engine results.”

Choose Quality Over Quantity – Always!

Since its inception, Google has been fighting off cheating practices of rank manipulation. This includes link schemes, link spamming, hidden keywords and keyword stuffing. Such practices are known as “black-hat SEO” and are used to boost website rankings.

Most people would like to know how long it takes a website to rank on Google, but the truth is there are no pre-determined deadlines for search engines; trying to bypass the process will only work against you.

Understand this:

“More content” doesn’t necessarily mean “better content”,

which is why Google rewards websites that offer value to its users, punishing and removing the schemers from search engine results pages.

What Should I Do When Google Releases Algorithm Updates?

Ultimately, Google relies on a broad network of trust indicators that help determine the most reliable and trustworthy sources available online.

Besides quality content, another main trust indicator is the amount and quality of links pointing back to your website, known as backlinks.

The same rule mentioned above applies here: choose quality over quantity! You can always find people offering hundreds and thousands of “quality” backlinks to your website for very little investment, but if some of them are “spammy” and not trustworthy, Google will mark your website as untrusted, and will remove it from its search engine results page.

Once Google has established your website as spam, it will require double, triple, or quadruple amount of effort to help it bounce back.

Quality backlinks are directly associated with Domain Authority (DA), a metric calculated by evaluating linking root domains, total links and more that helps predict how a website will rank on search engines, like Google.

Thus, for effective SEO strategy, building and managing the link profile of a website is crucial to improve its domain authority.

In Conclusion

While rankings will constantly oscillate, your position on search engines results pages should not shift drastically if you follow these principles.

Whatever you do, DO NOT panic: poorly constructed ideas and actions will negatively affect your SEO strategy; if you are applying white-hat SEO strategies, just be patient.

SEO Basics – 8 Key Strategies For Online Business Success

The world of search engine optimization (SEO) can be a big scary place for newbies. Most SEO professional companies charge astronomical prices that may or may not guarantee success.

The search engines are forever changing the way they rank websites and what is important to achieve a higher ranking. Even with these everchanging factors, there are 8 important points that you must use with your website that are not likely to change any time soon.

1. Domain Name

It is better to register a domain with a keyword in it, unless you are trying to brand yourself (think Coca Cola or Ebay). For instance, if your name is John Smith and you sell golf items you would be better off by registering a name like http://www.golfproducts.com instead of http://www.johnsmith.com.

Unfortunately with millions of website domain names being purchased all the time, finding a related domain name not already taken can be a daunting task. Still it is worth it in the end because it will carry more significance with the search engines.

2. Title Tag

This is an often overlooked place to input keywords. Have you ever been to a website and the bar at the top of the page just said ‘untitled’ or ‘homepage’? That reflects how little the site designer knew about SEO. Always put a descriptive title on EVERY page of your website. Put something like ‘Find golf clubs, golf clothes and the latest pro golf tips’, instead of ‘John’s golf shop’.

Make sure not to go overboard and just list 10 or more keywords or long sentences in a row or the search engines will think you are trying to spam them. Think quality over quantity. The title tag should contain one keyword rich descriptive sentence.

3. Meta Tags

The importance of meta tags in today’s SEO world is still being debated. It is still advisable to include a meta tag keywords and meta tag description in your code. A lot of times the search engines will pull your description tag to show in your websites search result. If nothing is there it may not show anything at all or it may pull the first sentence off of your page which might be completely irrelevant to your intended audience.

Do not, I repeat do not list 100 or more keywords in the keyword tag. This technique used to work years ago, but the search engines recognize this technique and will consider it spam. Place no more than 10 keywords in the meta keywords tag.

4. Link Strategies

Another important tip is to include keywords when linking to other websites or pages within your own site. For example it is better to have a sentence like this ‘Find out the latest professional golf tips.’ then to say ‘click here for the latest professional golf tips.’ This also applies to any outbound links to other related websites. Include keywords on the part you want the visitors to click on.

Same goes for incoming links to your site. If someone wants to link to your site give them the code to paste in their website instead of leaving them to do it on their own. Have something like ‘Check out John’s Golf shop for the best golf clubs, golf info and golf tips.” This is much better than ‘Click here for John’s Golf Shop’. Search engines also like longer more descriptive links than just one or two words.

5. Relevant Content

Make sure that you provide only relevant information to what your actually offering or selling. If you have a bunch of unrelated info on a wide range of topics than the search engines will have a harder time pinpointing exactly what it is your site is about. So if your selling golf stuff stick to golf content, don’t throw in articles or links about scuba diving.

6. PageRank

This is still a relatively new term and applies to an algorithm that Google’s search engine uses. Other search engines use similar strategies to Google’s PageRank also.

Basically PageRank is used to define how popular your website is. The more relevant inbound links you have coming into your website the higher your PageRank will be. Google also has a toolbar that you can download for free that will show you a site’s PageRank. The best way to go about getting inbound links is to find related websites with a PageRank of 5 or higher. Then asking them to include a link to your site (giving them the proper code to paste in).

Another way you can receive a higher PageRank is to have a ton of content on many different pages and then linking all the pages together in a way that will raise your PageRank. With that said this type of strategy will not boost your PageRank tremendously, so if your site doesn’t contain thousands of pages don’t stress over it. It is important though to link strategically with keywords between the pages of your site.

You can download Google’s toolbar at http://toolbar.google.com/

7.

This is an HTML header tag used to define size of text within the tag. Search engines place more importance on text that is placed within the H1 tag. It’s like telling the search engines that ‘hey this text is important to my site’. The problem is that it can look unsightly. There are ways around this if you know about CSS styles, but for this basic intro article just know that in the end most people won’t be bothered by how the heading looks, and it will make the search engines like you more.

8. Creating Credibility

An often overlooked part of free publicity for your website is writing free articles like this one that relates to your intended audience. There are many websites on the internet where you can submit your articles for other people to place on their websites. I even employ this same strategy for my website. It’s really a win win situation. They win because they get quality relevant content for their site and you win because your name and website info is included at the bottom of the article, driving traffic to your site.

You increase your inbound links (PageRank) and provide free publicity for your website. It gets your name out there branding you an expert in your field of expertise and provides free web traffic to your site.

Innovative Internet Marketing Solutions: 5 SEO Tricks to Rank Highly On Google

Within the last few decade the web and the incredible amount of online money making chances took the globe as we know it by surprise. You will discover individuals making 6 and even 7 figure earnings because of running their own online businesses.

The world wide web shows a serious possibility to profit if you are ready to work hard and wise. In addition, a lot of buyers now use Google as their number one resource for pre-purchase study and as a result ranking high on the search engines like Google is becoming a bigger factor than ever.

On this edition of my impressive online marketing remedies series I have to discuss along with you 5 tips that have helped me to rank my websites high on the search engines like google.

Content is king: In 1996 Bill Gates posted an article called “Content is King”. In this article Mr. Gates points out precisely how in the future decade the companies who have the best and the most content could be the ones to reign over the online markets.

I’ve come across sites which have amazing design, structure, or owners and they fail to capture the readers attention simply because they lack related good quality articles. While is true which online visitors browse the web to find products and services for their problems, they also love to find out more on how a selected services or products may help them.

Larger low quality traffic normally means much less sales: I know cases of web sites that have over 10,000 visitors per month and still rarely make any money. Why does this happen? As the traffic these types of internet sites are getting is what is called junk traffic or untargeted traffic.

What’s the point of owning a store in the heart of Time’s Square if your target audience never goes there? You’ll definitely get a lot of individuals walking by but your revenue can be really poor.

Review your competitors’ SEO campaigns: You need to remember to always maintain it ethical but business is business and to get an edge you need to understand your competitors’ marketing plans. The fact is that if your competitors are much better and convincing customers that their products and services are wonderful, you won’t get any business even if your merchandise is more preferable.

That is why I would recommend to always evaluate your competitors’ keywords and research their marketing plan. Every marketing plan has flaws and if you can locate those weaknesses in your competitors’ promotional efforts you may be able to have an edge.

Have desired goals and a plan to get to those targets: Goal setting is supremely essential for marketing success. Promoting your business without a clear list of goals is like soaring a plane without a destination. You must know exactly where you would like to go and how you will get there.

Each and every successful online marketer has defined his/her goals and then implemented a well thought marketing plan to allow them to achieve those goals. SEO is not a “one size fits all” solution and what works for other websites may not work for you.

Figure out how to find keywords that can be monetized: There are several keywords that generate higher conversion rates. Many of these keywords are long tail keywords, keywords which are specific to product types (or even names), and keywords that show that the consumer is comparing product.

Bear in mind, search engine optimization doesn’t occur overnight and to reach the first page of Google you need to be consistent, work hard, and above all work smart. I hope you liked my innovative internet marketing solutions series.

To your achievement,
