How To Raise Money For Your High School Study Abroad Experience

With the advent of social networking and the rise of online-based businesses, the opportunities for people to find careers around the world has greatly increased. Foreign language classes are commonly available for children as young as elementary school age, and it’s not out of the ordinary for high-schoolers to want to spend up to a year as a study abroad student. The choices that face young people today are astoundingly diverse and exciting.

Transitions Abroad is both a print magazine, as well as an online portal that provides in-depth information on issues related to studying, living, and working abroad. In their surveys of American foreign exchange students, the following traits have been reported in significant percentages:

  • Increased self-confidence
  • Increased maturity
  • Lasting impact on world view
  • Enhanced interest in academic study
  • Influenced subsequent educational experiences
  • Reinforced commitment to foreign language study
  • Helped foster a better understand cultural values and biases
  • Influenced a desire to seek out a greater diversity of friends
  • Continues to influence interactions with people from different cultures
  • Acquired skill sets that influenced career path
  • Ignited an interest in a career direction pursued after the experience

With these kind of life-changing properties, it is no wonder that so many young people want to spend time studying in a foreign country. However, such an experience can be very costly, and financial aid can be difficult to find. This presents a problem for many would-be adventurers.

Is It Really In You?

Before venturing down this path too far, however, the student needs to be sure he or she is ready to totally commit to this process. A two to three week program overseas can cost up to $6,000 itself, so the student needs to realize this is serious business. It is going to take hard work and great sacrifice to make this opportunity possible.

It is also important for a student to decide what kind of program will best serve his or her interests. While study programs have great value, perhaps a volunteer work program is a better fit. Or, maybe a church-oriented mission program would be appealing. Not everything has to be academically based. In fact, if you pick a non-academic type of program, you might find alternate means of funding. So, please do thorough research not only on where you want to go, but also what you want to accomplish. It could help you focus your efforts.

Step 1- Personal Commitment or “Digging in your Own Pockets”

I think that there are some preliminary steps that should be accomplished early in this process that will reveal just how serious the student is about making sacrifices for this adventure. If any of these suggestions turn the student off, I would question the decision to move forward.

Control Spending Habits

The first thing a student must do is look at his or her own spending habits. If a weekly movie, music downloads, clothes shopping, and other incidentals are a higher priority than the study abroad trip, saving thousands of dollars is going to be difficult. Therefore, the student will have to create a strict budget and slash those expenditures that will keep him or her from reaching the goal.

Sell Your Stuff

Secondly, it would be wise for a student to assess what items he or she could sell to earn money for the experience. eBay and other online auction houses are a great way to unload un-used or unnecessary items and earn pretty good cash for them.

A garage sale, held at the right time of year, can also be lucrative. You might even get your parents to “donate” all the proceeds to your study abroad fund. Perhaps friends and relatives would also be willing to give you their belongings to sell and keep the money.

Trade Your Stuff Up

Next, I know this may sound like an unusual suggestion, but in this age of email and cell phones, it might actually prove very profitable. I think the student should embark on a “Red Paperclip” project. I wrote a blog post about this on Top School Fundraisers. In essence, the student would choose an inexpensive item of his or her own and attempt to trade it to friends, families, co-workers, fellow students, or anyone willing to trade something of slightly higher value for it. Once the first trade is made, the student will immediately try to trade the second item for something of yet a higher value still. And so on. Eventually, once the student has traded for a significantly valuable item, he or she can sell it for cash and put that toward the trip.

I lead a class of adults once that undertook this experiment, and one woman ended up making a trade for an old car that had the original chrome on it. She took the chrome off, polished it, and sold it on eBay for $1,300! All this money-making opportunity takes is a cheap item to start with and the courage to ask people to trade. Who knows how far you could take this?

Blog Your Way to RichesAnother way to generate some revenue is to learn how to blog for money. There are a number of websites that will instruct you how to “monetize” your blog. You may not get rich from doing this, but incomes of $50 to $60 per month are pretty easy to set up and don’t require a lot of hard work. Just a little creativity and attention should get the job done. I would suggest looking at the websites called Problogger or Shoemoney for ideas.

Get a J-O-B

Ok, this is a boring one: find a job. Committing to a part-time job, if you haven’t done this before, can be a major step. It can intrude upon your studies and your personal life. But, if you want this overseas experience badly enough, you might be willing to work a few hours per week. If you make $7 per hour and work 15 hours per week for 36 weeks (an average school year) you could earn $3,780.

In the summer, you could even earn more. If you plan far enough ahead, you could really take a chunk out of the total bill this way. You won’t be doing anything glamorous for $7 per hour, but remember your goal. Of course, you can’t spend any of this income. Put it right in the ol’ savings account.

Start Your Home Business And Make Money Right Away – Without Any Talent, Experience Or Skills

For whatever reason, people hesitate starting a home business and making money at home because they don’t think they’re “qualified.” They think they need more education. They think they are missing something and not sure if they are “ready.”

But the thing is, you can make money at home (or anywhere else for that matter) without knowing a thing about business, selling, marketing, or running a company.

How do I know?

Because it happens to people with no skills, talents, money or experience all the time.

In fact, most of the really successful business owners out there are not good at everything their business does. They delegate and outsource. They find people to do the things they can’t or aren’t good at, and just focus on the one or two things they are good at.

I think the ultimate example of this would be — and I hate to use this example, but it’s apt — Hugh Hefner, the guy who owns Playboy Magazine.

He creates his magazines and doesn’t do any of the writing, selling, photography or anything. He just kind of walks around in a robe with women all day. He’s the personality behind the operation. And that’s what he does. He leaves everything else to others more capable than himself.

And by surrounding himself with talent, instead of trying to “be” the talent, he built the Play Boy empire.

Now, I’m not saying you have to get into a raunchy magazine business or anything like that. My point here is, you can start your home business whenever you want. If you don’t know what you’re doing, simply find people to do the stuff you can’t or don’t want to do and just focus on the one or two things you can do.

These days with the Internet and the many dirt cheap service provider auction sites, you can outsource just about anything you want — the sales, bookkeeping, marketing, copywriting, all of it.

So if you are wanting to start a home business, don’t let fear of not knowing enough about business or lack of real world experience stop you.

How to Start a Service Business in an Area You Have Little Or No Experience

Going by the increasing toll of unemployment in Nigeria and in most countries of the world, one option that readily comes to mind is churning out business ideas and making a living from such ventures.

However, good as entrepreneurship may seem, certain challenges are likely to be faced by the aspiring/budding entrepreneur who, due to lack of experience in his chosen career path, finds it difficult to get notice in the marketplace.

Amongst other qualities, experience, is obviously the most vital requirement needed for a successful service business. But this is not to say that some service business can’t be ventured into with little or no experience.

If you are thinking of starting an interior decorations business, for example, you are most likely to do well if you have worked in an organization or with someone having similar interest. Consider someone who starts a business and offers human relations management services, but never worked in an HR firm or as an HR administrator for a company!

Experience readily brings the judgment you would need to manage your business. This is the single most important skill needed in the service industry (and perhaps, in all types of businesses).

All hope is not lost if you are just a fresher. You can start a particular service business, and do well even if you have not worked professionally in a similar field. “How?” you ask. I will tell you now.

Let me identify two types of experience. These are: 1. Hands-on Experience; and 2. Self-Acquiring Experience.

Hands-on experience is the type of training you get as a result of your involvement in a particular activity. Here, you learn the skill first-hand; you make mistakes/errors and get corrected. Over the years, hands-on experience has proven to be the most accepted method of staff training, and many companies are aware of this fact. An accountant just starting off cannot, in any way, be compared with one with many years of hands-on experience. Likewise, a veteran sales person will, in most cases, outsell a beginner.

It is, however, worthy of note that acquiring corporate experience is not limited to the hands-on level. In the self-acquiring experience level, you engage in a conscious, self-acquiring exercise in order to be ahead of the game in your chosen career path.

The following are methods you can quickly use to become an experienced business person:

1. Read books authored by people who have several years of hands-on experience in the field that interest you. For instance, one of the professional books that have shaped my career is The Corporate Communications Bible by Robert Dilenschneider. In just one book, I was able to acquire public relations “wisdom” which had took the author several decades to learn!

2. Attend professional training/short courses. Attending programmes of this nature gives you unique opportunity to listen to experts as they teach. In most cases, you get opportunity to ask questions and practice what you have learnt.

3. Subscribe to and read newsletters regularly (whether paper or electronic-based). Newsletters offer unique information that may not be found elsewhere. Your self-acquiring effort may just pay of by reading one more newsletter.

4. Associate with ‘senior’ friends. You have no business spending your time with people who don’t know as much as you do. Pitch your tent with people who have gone ahead of you (and are successful) in similar business. Have them mentor you. By doing this, their experience rubs on you.

5. Apply what you have acquired. It is important to note that acquiring does not equal applying. You need to apply the wisdom acquired. Start small. Offer a kind of service that you can proffer immediate solutions to. The more you use what you know, the more you get skilled in the art, and the more you become experienced in that area! In the words of Dr. David Oyedepo, “Every fact you locate and apply puts you in control of life’s circumstances.”

And when it comes to a world where change is occurring every other minute we need to scrutinize and review what all things needs to be addressed in order to keep moving. For better optimization of strategies we need to be aware of the changes we are going to encounter in the coming time. Here are some important changes that we’ll be experiencing some time soon:

We have entered in the third screen world. The first screen involved big room size computers fashioned by Charles Babbage in 1990’s, then came in desktop screens, what we refer to as Personal computers (PCs) and now we have entered into the world where we opt for mbile phone screens for anything and everything and all this proactively works for creating a new Mobile ecosystem. So this requires to kick off on creating responsive mobile websites.

Statistical data and Facts:

• 95% smartphone users put location-based site links.

• Huge traffic can be drawn to mobile friendly sites as more than 1.5 billion users use mobiles instead of any other screen.

• A good UI (user interface) the engages good amount of prospect’s for longer period of time.

• 15% of all Internet traffic is mobile traffic, globally. (Source: Newtarget. com)

• 70% online action within an hour comes from Mobile searches. (Source: Socialmediatoday. com)

Social Media

SEO usually puts all the keywords people and more specifically targeted audience are inquiring for. Your audience is no longer in one place. People use other mediums to communicate their requirements, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Discussion panels or forums such as Yahoo answers, Quora etc. and directly browse on web, now the trend has changed and is more on phones. Keeping this in mind, plenty of brands has grown mobile-friendly in 2015. Social media is all about building a brand and spreading awareness about the prospects. To increase your ranking in Google search you need to have good reputation on social media that implies good network and active presence on social sites. That acts as a helping hand in having a great SEO rank.

Becoming more available or Real time is the key i. e. Audio Input to Search is a preferred mode

Nowadays, people prefer audio search instead of typing keywords for search just because of its convenience factor, specially when someone is driving or is engaged in multitasking. Almost all mobile devices have a voice search function. With audio search having so much of appealing power, most of the software companies, nowadays, focuses on audio search interface. Some like Microsoft, Google, and Apple have launched their own versions of advanced voice-responsive assistants – Cortana, Google Now and Siri, respectively. Even ‘Domino’s Pizza’ has a ‘voice-ordering feature. Allo, Whatsapp, and many more. However,

1. Long tail Keywords: When people carrying out with audio search they are more likely to ask questions like why to…? How to? When to? etc. these sentences come under long tail keywords category.

2. Know your Prospects: It’s always beneficial to use those keywords your target audience is searching for. Hence being aware of the keywords and usage of long tail keywords is a gateway to success and in real time could be an added advantage to it.

BACKLINKING AND INTERNAL LINKING IS ALWAYS IN

Backlinking or internal linking shall help you in engaging the right prospect who has come to your website. It’s not a new SEO technique but a very important one to keep the customer engaged once he has shown his interest.

INFOGRAPHICS:

1. USE ANIMATED DATA instead of text content: Content having animation pictures with tag lines is more likely to be preferred over text as its more user engaging.

2. USE SLIDER INSTEAD OF TEXT CONTENT: A Slider is considered to be a quick way to deliver an overview about a website to the visitors and in a more effective manner than just an image. Helps user to understand without putting in much effort.

3. SMALL VIDEO: A website named http://www.vimeo.com/ and many others help you create and share videos that furnishes and delivers your content in a more effective manner. Small videos would be like cherry on the cake.

My 2010 Business Experience

If it is complicated then it needs to be worked on more carefully.

The year 2010 has been my lowest in terms of hope for the survival of my business, however is has been my best success story in my nine years experience as a business owner.

As the year ends I reflect on my business experience so far in the years. The successes and the challenges, the successes where a very good experience which I believe will continue in the new Year and beyond. But the challenges which didn’t start in 2010 but I can say it ended in 2010. This challenges where as a result of bad business decisions due to inexperience ignorance and lack of my seeking advice from those whose business it is to help businesses succeed.

In April of 2010 I was almost sure my business will not survive the year, but I meet this great organization which helped me with vast management techniques I couldn’t have thought of. They are the small business success center, the subsequent corrections and lessons learnt will be greatly beneficial to me for the rest of my business life.

Example.

Financial planning is a prerequisite for the success and growth of any business enterprise. With out financial planning it is impossible for a business to function effectively and achieve goals set by the business. In essence financial planning means that the owners or managers of a business have to continuously determine the right financial management strategy to apply in successfully running the business.

Budgeting. Whether budgeting time or funds we all work on one form of budget or the other. Budgets vary form household budget, personal finance budget, to business budget. Every business has to work according to a budget to ensure it has enough fund to effectively fund its activities.

Budgets serve as an aid to the financial planning process. For example, in the budgeting processes capital requirements of the business for the budgeting period is determined – this enables the business manager/s to make provisions at an early stage for its financial needs.
