Joomla Website SEO Tips and Tricks

Hello,

I’d like to write a SEO tips and tricks article. I’m sure my SEO techniques work well enough but if you can improve on them please let me know. Everyone knows that the real key to good SEO after your site is ‘optimised’ correctly is new content but here are my top tips for Joomla website SEO. I hope you find them useful:

Keyword Research

Use Google to help you find keywords associated with your business. When you type words in the search bar Google suggests other keywords that you could use. Google Keyword Tool is a great resource for researching keywords for your business. It allows you to analyse a word to see how many people search that word on a monthly basis in a regional area.

Personally I thinks it’s better to optimise for keyword phrases rather than individual words, as people are more likely to specify their searches to ‘web designer Melbourne’ rather than just ‘web designers’.

Google prefers to show its customers more localised returns by displaying the local search returns in a map in the right hand column. When you scroll down the map actually goes over the paid advertisements.

Google Places

If you haven’t got a Google Account it’s worth creating one to access all of the tools Google has to offer. For your account page you can create a Google Places listing for your business. You can add business hours, payments terms and the categories you want to be found for and it’s free. Everything counts.

Browser page titles

Each web page should have it’s own unique browser page titles and be no more than 70 characters long. Include keywords in your browser page title. In Joomla the browser page title is either controlled by the Menu or the Title of your page/item. If you are creating a menu item to link to a single page you can control the browser page title by clicking Menus.

Select the link to edit

Click ‘Parameters System and enter the keyword rich page title in the Page Title field.

If you are viewing an article which is in a category the browser page title is taken from the title of the page you are viewing.

Tags

Ensure each page has H1, H2 and p tags. Remember to include keywords in your page titles. When I’m setting up a Joomla site, I prefer to use K2 for creating my pages/items and write my page titles on the page using the H1 tag. There should be only one instance of a H1 tag on the page otherwise it looks like spamming.

Images

Every image should have an ‘alt’ and ‘title’ description so that the search engines know what it is. Ensure your images are optimised before uploading them to your website to ensure faster loading times.

Interlinking

This is easier to do once you have a few pages on your site. When writing articles link keywords in your text to other relevant pages – a bit like Wikipedia. This makes it much easier for people to get around your website with having to go up to the menu and drill down for info. Internal links also rank as well as some external links to your site.

Backlinks

When looking for backlinks sites you really want PR1 sites. These are Page Rank 1 sites that allow you to write on their blogs or create an account where you can add a backlink. Remember the anchor text is the most important part of the backlink as it should be descriptive and include your keywords. The link would probably work better if linking directly to the page the anchor text refers to.

Example: Web Designers Melbourne

Ideally you want your backlink to be placed on an ‘important’ page on a well ranked site. Don’t use backlink farms. Your website will take a serious nosedive if you do. Create the backlinks slowly over time and be patient.

SEO Friendly URL’s in Joomla

When creating your Joomla site it’s best to use the Search Engine Friendly URLS. If you’re server is Apache you will need to change a file name on your server. In the root folder locate htaccess.txt and change it to.htaccess

If a.htaccess already exists I usually delete it and rename the htaccess.txt and use that.

When you have done that login into your Joomla website and go to:

Site / Global Configuration

Ensure the ‘Site’ tab is selected and you will see the SEO settings on the right.

Search Engine Friendly URLs – Yes

Use Apache mod_rewrite – Yes

Add suffix to URLs – No

Press Save.

Now all of your URLs will have easy to read URLs.

Articles / Items

When writing an article (or Item in K2) you need to fill out the ‘Metadata Information’. The description box is the short description people see when searching pages in Google so write it well and concise. The ‘Keywords’ field is self explanatory. Add keywords and phrases separated by commas.

In the Robots field enter: ‘index, follow’

In the Author Field enter: Your name and keyword. It can’t hurt.

Don’t forget the H1, H2 and alt tags when writing your article.

Sitemap

When your site is ready you should create a sitemap.xml file. Google search xml sitemap creator and you’ll find a site to help you create one of these. When it’s complete download the sitemap.xml file to your computer and upload it to your server. Now login to your Google Account and click Webmaster Tools. Add your site to your Webmaster Tools

Submit your sitemap to Google

The best way to submit your site to Google is not through a Submit URL but through your webmaster tools. Click ‘Diagnostics’ in the left column. Then click ‘Fetch as Googlebot’. Here you can add the main him page and any other key pages on your site. Google will find your other pages but it’s good to let them know about your key pages.

Robots

Your site should have a robots.txt file that tells visiting search engine robots which pages they should look at.

This is mine as an example:

User-agent: *

Allow: /sitemap.xml

Allow: /index.php

Allow: /index.html

Allow: /index.htm

User-agent: *

Disallow: /akeeba-backups

Disallow: /cgi-bin

Disallow: /logs

Disallow: /plugins

Disallow: /tmp

Disallow: /xmlrcpc

Disallow: /administrator

Disallow: /cache

Disallow: /editor

Disallow: /help

Disallow: /includes

Disallow: /language

Disallow: /media

Disallow: /modules

Disallow: /templates

Disallow: /installation

Google Analytics Code

Log into your Google Account and go to Google Analytics. Create the right analytical code and put this code in your index.php file just before the tag. This way you can track the search terms people are using when arriving at your site along with lots of other information.

Submission to lots of Search Engines

If you want to submit to lots of search engines a good site to do this is http://www.addme.com. Simply fill out the details and away you go. Some submissions need to be confirmed.

Business Directories

Directories can help with backlinks to your site as well as pushing people to your site from those directories. Do a quick search for local business directories and submit to them today.

Keyword Density

The Addme website also has a great ‘Keyword Density’ checker. Here you can analyse your sites keyword density and adjust your article writing accordingly to what you want to optimise for. Your keywords need to feature for 10% of the length of your article. Ie 10 instances for every 100 words. You just have to be clever in the way you write so it doesn’t sound contrived.

I think that is it. If you have any other top SEO tips please let me know.

Cheers,

Neil.

Has Someone Been Stealing Your Content?

It’s in the lips of every respectable SE marketer. It’s considered to be the “holy grail” of your linking efforts!

What’s that? Marketing with articles, of course!

You will often hear how you can make your way to the top of the search engines, on any given topic, by writing articles and using them to promote your business.

And it’s true! But, what they usually don’t tell you is that there will be dozens or hundreds of sites and publications that will use your content without giving you credit for it.

And you have no way of knowing about it! You’re completely defenseless and at the mercy of every webmaster who decides to literally steal your content! Stealing defined as any use of copyrighted content that violates the author’s publishing guidelines.

And if you already knew that, let’s look at some interesting statistics. These will give you some awareness of the situation when you begin writing articles to promote your business or get more links.

Last time I checked, there were 1,370 sites which had included one of my articles on affiliate marketing on their pages. Do you want to know how many of them cared to provide a link back to my site? Very, very few!

Why? Well, it seems that many site owners think they can take the articles and put them on their sites for their visitors to read but do not feel they should return the favor by having a live link to the author’s site (as required).

After all, creating and providing fresh content for their visitors and for the search engines is a favor I’m doing for them.

By now you’re probably thinking, “too bad, but what has that got to do with me?” Oh, I don’t know, do you own a site? And do you publish your own content on your site?

If you do then, how can you be sure that the content that you spent so much time developing and tweaking in order to rank well in the search engines, appears nowhere else except on your site? How do you know for sure that no other website has “borrowed” some “stuff” from you?

And if you’re marketing your business with articles how will you know who has posted them and where, if they don’t care enough to send you a copy?

Trust me, most of them won’t! Many of the major article banks and directories do inform you when they have posted one of your articles because usually there are other incentives for them to do so. They might sell you a subscription or simply benefit from the fact that you will visit the site to see your article posted. Who knows, while you’re there you could be intrigued by one of their offers.

But the smaller sites -not all of them- will not take the time to let you know, let alone give you a link back. So, how will you know?

No sweat! I’m sure many of you have been using Google to search on things like products, services, even competitors or link exchange partners.

And I’m also sure that some of you are already thinking that Google is a nice place to go look for your article or unique content and see what comes up in the search results. Sure, you can do that, but I prefer to use a handy little tool by Google which is automated, will not take any of my time, is very easy to use and above all, is free.

I am talking about Google Alerts: a great tool by Google that you can set and forget but which will do all the dirty work for you uncovering all those sneaky sites that have “accidentally” forgotten to put a live link into your article’s bylines.

As Google puts it: “Google Alerts are email updates of the latest relevant Google results based on your choice of query or topic”. There, I couldn’t have said it better!

How does it work? It’s easy, you sign up for a Google account or just create a Google Alert using the really easy interface (http://www.google.com/alerts). First, you are asked to specify your search term, meaning the kind of text that you want Google to inform you about. Then you tell Google where to look for it and how often you want to receive your alerts. Finally, you fill in your email address and you’re done!

By creating a Google account, if you don’t already have one, you can manage all your alerts in one place which is really useful.

The potential of this tool is huge. You can search for anything at anytime and have Google deliver it to your mailbox, saving you the trouble.

More importantly, you can use it to keep an eye on what’s important for your business. As a business person, I’m sure that’s one of your primary concerns.

Local SEO Tips You Need to Implement

If you want to target a specific town, you should have a physical address in its locality.

It is very important to have a consistent physical address in the area you choose to optimize. In addition, the vicinity where your specific address is located should be as close as possible to your targeted area.

Use Google My Business (GMB) the proper way.

Google has made GMB more important, meaning, any business info you include in it also appears on Google+, Google Search and Google Maps. This makes it easier for customers to locate you with whatever device they use.

When you create or further expand your GMB for local SEO, make sure that:

You fill in your GMB completely with accurate, relevant and consistent information

You list an owner-verified GMB location

You mention the specific town and city you are targeting in the GMB landing page title

The GMB’s main categories are consistent with your products that match a wide-ranging search category.

Make sure that the NAP or Name, Address and Phone on your site is the same on GMB.

Aside from your physical address, make sure that the NAP matches the name of your business; this has to be consistent wherever it appears on the web.

In particular, you should use an accurate template for your NAP no matter where they are used – like on your site, Google+ account, GMB or other sites, as well as directory listings.

Make sure your website includes a map to your physical address.

In addition to including contact info on your website, it would also help a lot to incorporate an actual map so people will know your exact location. You can add a code on the contact page of your site to include a map to your location.

Give a distinct web page for every product.

If you offer different products/services, see to it that each has its own webpage, together with specific and relevant details. These pages in particular can be linked from a page that shows the products/services offered in your portfolio.

Use citations properly.

Obtaining citations in major directories across the globe, region and locality is crucial for local SEO. Citations have the ability to boost credibility and build authority for your website, and best of all drive, traffic to your site.

However, if you have no website (it is a must), you can be more visible with the help of local listings.

If you plan on using citations, make sure that:

They are consistent.

They come from good quality websites.

Your business gets mentioned in blog posts and the local newspaper.

You have a lot of domains that are relevant to your locality and industry that talk about your business in a positive manner.

Internet Marketing For Small Business – Part 2 of 5 Steps to Succeeding With Google AdWords

Continuing on from my last article ‘Internet Marketing For Small Business – Part 1 of 5 Steps to Succeeding With Google AdWords”, here are the final steps to ensuring a successful Google AdWords Campaign.

2. Understanding Quality Score:

Once you have added your keywords, Google will tell you your quality score. Its important that you have a good to great quality score in your keywords (usually rated out of 10), if you get a poor or OK quality score, it means you have done something wrong. It could be that you are bidding on the wrong keywords, that your landing page is not specific enough for those keywords or Google does not think your ad is related to your keywords or that the page you are sending people does not have those keywords in it.

The quality score will be determined from a number of things:

  • You need to have a high CTR: A high quality score must be over 1% and this will also depend on how your ads are showing up. If your ad is appearing on the 2nd or 3rd page, then this will mean your quality score is lower but if you are in the top 5 or 6 positions, your CTR should be over 1%. Therefore you need to work on getting that CTR as high as you with a baseline of 1% as the CTR. You should always get a CTR of over 1%, even as high as 15% and the way you get a high CTR is by testing. You write 2 different ads and see which ones performs better. Usually after 30 to a 100 clicks, you pick the ad that gets a higher click rate and write a variation on it. You then go on and write another ad that is different to that one and see which one performs better again (beating the control). When you have found a theme that performs very well, you can tweak your ads by adding a question mark, quotations around it, switch the descriptions lines or even change your url. You can do any of these things to tweak your ad so that you can get a higher CTR, thus a higher quality score.
  • Its Not A Bidding War….Most people when starting out with Google AdWords usually say “I want to be in the top position, at number 1 and I am willing to pay more than anyone else to be there”. This is the wrong way to go about it. It should not be a bidding war, it should be a fight over who is the better advertiser, that is what Google really wants. Google wants you to write an ad that gets the highest CTR so that they make more money ie. the more clicks, the more money you pay them. So if you can write a better ad than your competitors, Google will be very willing to reward you for that. They reward you by charging you less per click and putting you in a higher position on the page. Lets say your ad gets a 2% CTR and your competitor gets a 1% CTR, it probably means you are going to pay half as much per click and be ranked higher than your competitor because Google will know the user is having a better searching experience. Hence you should always have two ads running and check which ad is performing better. If one is performing badly, pause it, write a better ad and see if you can beat your better performing ad.

3. Tracking:

AdWords is probably the best system for tracking that exists. It is very easy with Google AdWords to set up your keywords and track how well they are performing ( i.e. by making you money). What is most important is to track whether the clicks are making you sales or converting into leads or sales. If your clicks are not converting, you are obviously just wasting money so it is very important that you track down at a keyword level which ones are making money for you. This is called keyword conversion tracking and there are a couple ways of doing it. The best way is to have Google do it for you. Google has some keyword conversion tracking code which they will allow you put it on your thank you or finished page and they will let you track a sale or a conversion.

The other way you can track conversions is by assigning a specific URL to every keyword (help can be found at the Google AdWords Tutorial). The better you understand how to track conversions, the better your results will be with AdWords. You will find that as you get more clicks on your campaign and by tracking everything, different keywords will perform very differently even though they may seem very similar. For example ‘dog training’ maybe very different to ‘train my dog’, you may find that one of them may convert much higher than the other one.

On another level, you can track conversions through the success of your ad campaigns. Some ads may perform better than other ads, for example one ad may have a price and the other may not, this means anyone that clicks on the ad with a price knows that they have to buy something when they go to that page – that ad will convert at a higher percentage than if you did not have the price on the ad. It will probably have a much lower CTR but also a higher conversion rate. This is really something that needs to be tested on every campaign to see if you are getting a return on investment because in the end the goal is to make the greatest amount of money. Track everything!

4. Bidding:

Over the years bidding has changed, it use to be bid low and then raise your bid and to see what the lowest point was. That is probably not the wisest thing to do anymore – at least not right now. Right now what I suggest is start by bidding high, what this does is allow you to get a good position on AdWords and a good CTR. As you establish the CTR, Google will recognize that you are a good advertiser and then you can lower your bid everyday to what Google is actually charging you (whilst maintaining your high CTR). What you need to figure out is whether you are getting a good returns for the money you are actually spending so if you are spending a $1 and getting $2 back – you know its worth continuing the campaign.

5. Last words:

Please don’t get emotional attached to a keyword because you ‘like’ the keyword or believe it should work. Do not expect to learn everything upfront and then go implementing a Google AdWords campaign effectively. If you have your own full time business and love what you are doing – then get a professional in to run your own PPC campaigns.

Accelerate Your Home Business With RSS

What is RSS and how do you use it to grow your home business?

Many people ask this question, hopefully I can shed some light on this topic.

RSS or Rich Site Summary (also called Really Simple Syndication) is a format for delivering updates and changes to a website or blog. It allows readers or visitors to your site to stay up to date and informed on any changes or additions you have made.

RSS replaces the days when we would simply bookmark a specific site and go in from time to time to see any new postings or website information. The downside with bookmarks is the time spent going from every site to identify if changes or additions have been made.

RSS is a technology that gives you a way of getting the most up to date information from your favorite sites as soon as the new information is posted on the site.

This tool is one of the easiest to use and absolutely free with web based Google Reader. Google Reader will help you find and keep track of various blogs and websites. As new content comes to your Google Reader, you can read it immediately or go to the actual site. When you finish reading a post or article, the document will be marked as read and you can move on to the next post.

How Will RSS Help My Home Business Grow?

Getting feedback from your customers or visitors is essential to build your home business. Ask yourself, how you are getting feedback from your customers and/or visitors. Feedbacks can be in the form of comments to your articles, surveys and testimonials to name a few.

Knowing what your customers are saying about your products or services within your home business is extremely important. You need to know if there are issues that should be addressed either through making changes or being able to explain misunderstood information. If you are not getting feedback, you are flying blind.

Positive feedback is wonderful because it reinforces your topic direction and makes you realize you are providing useful information. On a personal note, it leaves you feeling really good knowing the needs of your home business prospects were met. Reading comments on your site as well as others’ sites will give you a little insight helping you make your home business more appealing. Using RSS to stay up on other sites is a great way to give you new ideas to incorporate into your home business.

The bottom line is RSS allows people to track your site and visit regularly to learn more about your home business opportunities and products.

Most word press themes offer RSS on blog sites to increase traffic and boost the blogs’ notoriety. If you do not have an RSS Icon on your site, it’s time to add one.

Keeping your articles and posts current will engage viewers and customers. It is important to keep them active with your home business opportunities and stay fresh in their minds. Continue to post questions on your site to encourage viewers to be participate. As a home business leader, stay on top of what people are buying or looking for. Your site reinforces information that will help with marketing ideas, campaigns and provides benefits of your home business and why they should sign-up with you or buy your particular product.

Webinars on Acme People Search – How YOU Benefit

Hello Everyone!,

I took the time to attend Tissa Godavitatne’s free webinars for Acme People Search Engine Affiliate Program this week (On Thursday and Saturday 12 AM Singapore time!). As a practicing IT Manager in Singapore, working into the wee hours was not an issue :-). I made up a list of things I wanted to clarify from Tissa and was looking forward to my first 2 webinars with the man on Thursday and Friday night.

Did Tissa blow us away or what!!

Tissa answered every one of the concerns that was thrown at him,be it on the Acme People Search Engine Or Global Domains International. Many affiliates shared their success (or failure) with the Acme People Search and GDI.

Here is a recall of the Q & A we had with Tissa Godavitarne.

Adrian’s Question : How does the the Acme People Search Engine make money for you?

Tissa Answered : By referrals and product sales!

There are seven streams of income in your back office. You can earn from sales of digital products from Clickbank, HD Publishing, MyLife and Google AdSense as well as affiliate commissions.

You earn referral fees for recruiting affiliates for Lunar Pages,GDI and the Acme people search engine itself. In summary you will earn from MyLife, Google AdSense, HD Publishing, GDI,Lunar pages, Clickbank and of course referral fees to the Search engine.

Adrian’s Question : What is this “business opportunity” you keep talking about?

Tissa Answered : The option of joining Global Domains International which gives you web hosting, a free website builder, a domain name, and 10 email addresses.

Joining GDI gives you the chance to earn a residual income with their referral program that runs 5 levels deep. The Acme people search engine builds your GDI downline for you!

Adrian’s Question : How do you drive traffic to your Acme people search engine presell and landing pages?

Tissa Answered : Paid (PPC highly recommended) and Free web traffic!

Yahoo! Search Marketing,Microsoft AdCenter and Google AdWords are the main sources for paid traffic. If you want to realise your full earnings potential then you must learn PPC.

However If you’re just starting out the following FREE sources of TARGETED traffic is recommended.

– Article Submission :- Squidoo lenses,Ezine Articles, and Blogs

– Video Submission : – Upload your video demo’s to Metacafe, Google Video and YouTube

– Social Networking marketing :- Facebook, Myspace LinkedIn and Twitter,

– Email Campaigns :- Autoresponders from Aweber and GetResponse do a great job and dont spam!

Free traffic sources NOT recommended

– Text ad placements.

– List builders

– Email blasters

– Safe lists

The traffic you get from the above sources are not targeted AND you can be blacklisted for spamming. By all means use them if you are experienced (You still undertake the risk of a spamming complaint), but NOT if you are just starting out

Adrian’s Question : What’s your take on Search Engine Optimization?

Tissa Answered : A Search result in Google is split into 2 types. ie Organic and Sponsored results. The former contains a listing of indexed websites arranged in order of relevance, content, back links, keyword quality, and Page rank. SEO is the process of optimizing your website to be displayed very high for a given keyword, Ideally on the first page of a Google search!. It is a different ball game altogether. You must learn PPC in order to drive traffic to your Acme People Search Engine and Presell pages.

Thank You Tissa!

Each Webinar was supposed to be of ONE hour duration but they stretched close to the two hour mark on both occasions! This guy must be nuts to pay for that much of bandwidth, but hey he WANTS us to succeed remember?

This is the type of product support I expect only from a paid membership program, but here is Tissa offering it to all for free!.

There were so many gems shared by the other attendees in addition to Tissa, all with the intention of helping one another SUCCEED as an Acme People Search Affiliate and GDI affiliate.

In a nutshell these are the points that grabbed my attention

– Tissa’s Secret GDI sign up sauce

– Why you get ‘Google slapped’ and how to avoid it

– Acme People Search Engine Affiliates on the current GDI Leader board!

– Why Craigs list should NOT be used to advertise.

– How an Affiliate is using Traffic Gieser to drive tons of targeted traffic to his blog with video marketing.

– Success stories of Newbies making money online in their first WEEK of promoting the Acme people Search engine.(This is not including the $125 commission Tissa gives you when you sign up)

– What benefits the system brings when embedded with GDI to to work from home mom.

And so much more!

This is a perfect opportunity for those of you want to use the Acme people Search engine for free to address your concerns about the product. You get to talk to the product owner who pays for your bandwidth so that you can speak up!

So Folks, that’s it from me for now. I will continue posting the results my interaction with the man in the next webinar. Right now, I cannot wait to apply what I learned and get me some more mooolah! With the Acme People search Engine!

Take care and have a great weekend!

What Are the Free Ways to Make Money Online?

Your website or blog is already up and running so why not monetize it for all it’s worth?

Using free methods to make money online can be profitable but at some point if you want to increase your earnings you will have to reinvest in your business. In this case you should consider writing a short eBook on a topic that people need to know about and that you have an interest in. If you don’t know a lot about any topic don’t worry. You can research it and then write about it in your own words. The important point is it has to be about something that people want to learn or need to answer. Someone is going to provide it to them, why can’t it be you?

Easy Steps to Create a Google Email at Your Own Dot Com Free – Own a Dot Com for Free

This used to be impossible to do without paying for your own domain name, therefore, having an email at your own dot com costs.

The key to owning your own dot com email is getting a free domain name. Once you find this, setting up the email will be easy. Google just recently launched its Google Apps service providing smart business applications for email, documents, sites and more. They are willing to host your domain name for free and take advantage of their business services at no cost.

There are several companies that say they offer free domain names. Web hosting companies give free domain names as part of their hosting package. Others are just redirection services. What they really provide is a sub domain of a very short domain name. Try using this service and you won’t be able to host the domain name in any web hosting company. Why? Because you don’t really control the domain.

In order to have full control of the domain name, one must be able to control its cname, a, mx, and ns records. If you own a domain and try to host it in a free web hosting service, the host will ask you to point your domain to their name servers. Google apps will ask you to change the cname record to what they will provide. Google can also give their mx records for you to copy and paste in your domain management.

We need to find a free domain name service that supports full DNS control and domain management. One that provides free DNS and MX services.

Once you have full control of your own domain name for free, you can now sign up for a free web hosting service. Point your domain to their name servers, modify the mx record to the one provided by Google apps and presto, you got yourself a Google email at your own dot com.

All these are now possible and easily doable. Own your dot com for free and create an email address at your own dot com free.

Let’s slow down a little bit. These are what you need and look for:

1. A free domain name. You must have full control of this domain. Find a service that provides full DNS control and domain management. One that is not merely a redirection service.

2. Sign up for a good free web hosting company. One that provides own domain hosting for free. Take advantage of what they offer like large disk spaces, 100gb to 300gb bandwidth, easy to use website builder, and a Fantastico one click script installer. This is where you will host your new domain name. Get their name servers and go back to your domain management to point your domain name to the web host’s name servers.

3. Sign up for Google Apps using your domain name. Google will ask you to activate email by providing their MX record.

4. Log back in to your free web host member’s area and at your control panel, you can modify the MX record. Enter the one provided by Google.

Once completed, all you have to do is wait 24 to 48 hours for these settings to take effect. You now have your new domain name, a good web hosting service, and your Google email at your own dot com all for free. Why not build your website from here and start a new confident journey to an online business. Or just simply have fun.
