The Simple Road Reflector Saves Lives and Provides a Great Teaching Template

One wintry night in 1933, Percy Shaw found himself driving his automobile on a remote country road in England. The night was moonless; the fog hung densely and there was a persistent mixture of rain and snow belting against his windshield. The road was little more than a lane, with no signage, no shoulders, winding and curvy. Any error in judgement would be very costly indeed.

As Mr. Shaw slogged along he suddenly came upon a rise in the road and was startled when a small Morriss Minor automobile appeared right at the crest of the grade. The approaching car was headed directly at his vehicle. He was on a slight curve, it was pitch dark, the road was slick and unmarked. In the split second he had to make a decision a small housecat scampered across the road. The headlights of Mr. Shaw”s car illuminated the eyes of the cat, and the reflection from those iridescent orbs provided Percy Shaw with just enough perspective to gage his distance and edge safely around the Morris Minor.

As Percy Shaw gathered himself after his close call, he began to think about what had occurred. Why were roads of the time so dangerous? What had just happened that he could take advantage of in a way to help all motorists? He became motivated to improve road safety for every driver everywhere. But how?

The reflection from the cat’s eyes was the key to the solution Mr. Shaw sought. He began tinkering in his garage workshop. After a number of attempts, he perfected the first “cat’s eye road reflectors”. Today, the ubiquitous illuminated reflectors implanted in roadbeds and placed strategically along roadside rights of way are part of the driving experience that we take for granted. They provide safety and guidance at night, and in horrid weather conditions. In the 1930’s they were considered an amazing safety advance.

The British Government immediately endorsed and implemented the installation of the reflectors on roads across the British Isles and then across the Empire. Millions of Percy Shaw’s “cat’s eye road reflectors” enhance driving safety around the world to this day. Mr. Shaw was Knighted by Queen Elizabeth and profited mightily from his invention. He was always most proud of the safety benefits his simple invention had provided mankind.

Modern entrepreneurs and inventors can take a simple lesson from this seemingly elementary invention. Percy Shaw was not thinking about inventing the “cat’s eye road reflector” that stormy night in 1933. An event occurred that made him consider possibilities. He sensed a need. He addressed that need. He profited from his answering the need he had identified, and all motorists realized the benefits of his inventiveness.

Creative entrepreneurs are always seeking to offer products and services that provide improved features and performance benefits not available in current items. The simplest of ideas and concepts are often the most commercial. The example of Percy Shaw’s invention of the “cat’s eye road reflector” is a wonderful template for aspiring inventors.

Opportunity can appear at the most unexpected moments. Be aware, be flexible and be opportunistic if you want to enjoy the fruits that come to successful innovators. The market always is open to new, novel products.

CRM Application, a Search Made Simple for All

So like several entrepreneurs, I too decided to start my own home grown/ internet presence only business. My idea of initiating such a venture was that it will add to my monthly earnings and promote a sense of internet presence and urge me to research about internet marketing. Now although I am starting as a small time home decor selling business and I do not expect it to go viral anytime soon, still I wanted an efficient way to manage my customer information and some way to keep a record as to what my interactions where with a customer and how likely is he to buy more from me. This enthusiasm required me to get my feet wet on a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solution for my business. Now my search for a CRM solution come with the criteria that it should come within my allocated budget, preferably free or a minimum setup cost, small not too bloated for its own good, simple to set up, does not involve intensive learning curve and if possible some way to backup customer information either online or some external hard drive for redundancy.

For my search I turned to trusted Google and placed a query for CRM solution for small business. My query produced 400,000 webpages. Apart from the top ads one of the first result page was from smallbizcrm.com. Something that immediately caught my attention to this website was that they not only lay top 10 or top 20 CRM solutions available in the market, but also educate their readers as to

  • What it means to have a CRM solution for your business,
  • Does a person really need a CRM solution for their business,
  • Best way to evaluate horde of CRM applications currently available
  • And a strategy plan as to how best to prep your business to reap maximum benefits of a CRM solution

All through the means of case studies and white papers that can be read online or downloaded for later viewing. Now although all CRM applications fulfill the same purpose however not all CRM applications are made equal.SmallBizCRM  They categorized various CRM installation available in market based on availability, design, coding, hosting facilities, installation platforms, cost etc. Furthermore under each category they sorted applicable CRM solutions as per market reviews including their own experience with that version.

Reading through all their reviews and judging the popularity levels of various CRM applications definitely helped me to choose the CRM solution most applicable to my business needs. Did I mention that they offer whitepapers collected from many reputable sites that publish articles on CRM solutions and provide educative content to their readers!! All above analysis and whitepapers for their readers all without any registration needs or spam mails or unnecessary advertisements under the convenience of a single URL, what more can you ask of them!

Mobile Marketing Trends 2011: Simple Mobile Marketing Ideas for This Year and Onwards

With today’s advancements in technology and the growing popularity of smart devices, the mobile marketing trends of 2011 are more likely to focus on smart phones and the integration of online marketing with mobile SMS marketing strategies. Smartphone marketing is all about the promotion and advertisement of products or services via a platform that can efficiently convert mobile SMS into a high conversion marketing resource. Although this is a fairly new concept in the business sector, it already has a huge potential for success, thanks to its simplicity. Plus, it is very effective at delivering messages to a specific target audience.

Becoming more and more popular among business owners and marketers alike, mobile SMS marketing and promotion is an effective tool that any business can use in promoting their products and services, and increasing their brand awareness in the market. Although relatively new and untapped, smartphone marketing provides a very broad definition. However, it can be broken down into several categories, depending on the focus of the mobile promotion method. As of today, the focus of mobile marketing trends is mostly on SMS marketing.

SMS are relatively cost-effective and offer several benefits aside from directly promoting your products or services to your business’s specific market niche. Plus, when it comes to bulk messaging, marketers have a lot to gain. After all, with such a low-cost operation, they can instantly interact with larger audiences – possibly millions of them – all at once.

Mobile marketing trends are currently focusing on the emergence of low-cost smart phones in the market that will allow consumers to have a more diverse method of communication. Since messaging can be mixed with Internet browsing now, as well, marketers can now easily combine the power of SMS marketing with that of the Internet to create an even more powerful marketing method.

Plus, since monochromatic four-liner phones have become obsolete and replaced with wireless-ready smart phones with package applications, mobile marketing becomes even more interesting and challenging. The only thing marketers need to focus on now is to learn new ways of accessing this marketing source and take advantage of the relatively low competition associated therewith at the moment.

Using special applications and programs for smartphone marketing is one way to gain advantage among other marketeers in the field today. So, with the right tools, it is completely possible to tap into the largest resource of potential clients since targeting the right market niche is what mobile marketing is all about.

With that said, lets ‘Now’ define what RSS(Real Simple Syndication) “IS” in plain english for those of you who are NEW to it and for those of you who are still a little bit confused about it and its uses.

RSS is by definition — an acronym for “Really Simple Syndication” or “Rich Site Summary”, and the .XML extension is the format used for distributing YOUR news headlines via the Web, which is known as “Syndication”.

“Syndication” is where the TRUE power of RSS is unleashed, getting your message or information across the web in an INSTANT to websites, your subscribers and/or readers.

Now, to put this in plain english, “RSS” is simply a technology that distributes YOUR information(whatever it might be — ex. Articles, Special Offers, Product Reviews, Resource Announcements) by syndicating it across the net.

It’s that simple.

It doesn’t have to get any more complex then that.

The more websites, subscribers and/or readers that opt-in to your RSS feeds, the more FREE targeted TRAFFIC you’ll receive from their websites.
