What do you want from a network marketing company?

If you are like most people looking at home based business opportunities, you want an opportunity which offers you a really good chance at success, right?

Please put everything you have ever heard or read aside for a minute and consider the following 3 dirty little secret about MLM you have never heard or read:

Dirty Little Secret About MLM # 1:

This secret is about products and how long any network marketing company may last.

A company which has products that are solid performers with a good sales history, but that are not cutting edge can be good – you can be sure that you will be able to sell some of the products.

Conversely, you may find it harder to sell products which are widely sold and consumed by many different companies – and for the obvious reason competition.

A new “buzz” product – one people can get excited about can fly out of your hands – at least in the beginning. It is possible that a new product will sell fast for a while – only to fade if it becomes apparent it isn’t performing as advertised. Nothing can destroy your business faster.

What can you do?

If you can find a company with a product that is relatively unknown in the market, but that is quickly growing in popularity – and that product has already caused many people to talk about it and write about it, you may have found a product “rave wave.”

A past example of “rave wave” would be liquid minerals during the 1990s.

My wife and I joined a company in 1996 which was relatively new and had a new product. After using the product with our family we quickly experienced real results. Nothing is better.

Once we had results with the product, we were easily able to find others to share the good news with – and that resulted in sponsoring 300 people in just over one year – and our group grew to 10,000 over the next few years.

Yes, we had tried to build a business with another MLM company that did not have a new and exciting product before we marketed the liquid minerals. We worked super hard with the first company for a year. Our income was $1,500 after 12 months. It was too slow and not much fun.

Should sharing a product be fun?

If the product is exciting and gets results, sharing it with others is exciting and fun. If the product (no matter how good it is) is not new and doesn’t get relatively exciting results, your business will not be fun – it will be WORK!

The end result of our second network marketing or MLM experience was earning over $1 million in 4.5 years – even though we stopped actively “working the business” after just 14 months.

What did we do?

Our children were young. We home schooled them. We did 4H. We took them on a 5 month vacation. We felt almost like “aliens” walking around in a society that was “living for the weekend” because we didn’t have to work…

Did the product sell for a long time?

We still use that product today, 17 years later… and we still get results with it. The opportunity to sell the product through network marketing faded because eventually, the product was everywhere. The company no longer exists. We got our last check a few months ago – it was $89. Our peak check during the third year was $24,561.

What is the dirty little secret here?

Many network marketing companies succeed fast because of a hot product, but don’t last because they fail to find new and exciting products as each product enters the mainstream of the market place and competition rises.

Does that mean network marketing is a bad idea for a home based business?

It is a bad idea if you expect a company to provide you an above average income for life. Yes, there are a few exceptions in the industry. Were we dissapointed when the excitement stopped and our group faded away? Yes, of course we were. We decided we would never “do” MLM again. That was 17 years ago.

In the time since, we built a large real estate company which peaked at 148 agents.

What happened? The boom that collapsed in 2008 put an end to our office. Suddenly, no one was buying real estate, but we still had to come up with $30,000 a month to pay the bills of the business. We “fed” the business hoping for the market to change – it didn’t change!

Hindsight is 20 / 20.

What did we learn? We learned that conventional business contains more risk and more down side than network marketing.

If you join a company that eventually fades away, you don’t have to spend a ton of money desperately pushing on a string. And of course, you don’t need much money to start a network marketing downline in the beginning either.

Sure, we made a lot of money with the real estate office – and lost a lot of money too! When our MLM business faded away, we still made money until the last check.

Yes, we still sell real estate – but the thrill has been gone for a long time… and so, we have reexamined our years in network marketing – they were the best years of our lives.

What about the people we got involved in MLM? Yes, we made relatively good money, but what about our downline?

You (and we) cannot control everything.

What about all the agents we had trained who could no longer make a living selling real estate? They found other work. Were they better off for having learned to sell real estate? We think so. Many are still selling real estate. Most are grateful for the education and for the relatively easy commissions they earned during the boom. They know the crash wasn’t our fault.

As for our old MLM downline – what happened to them?

80% of network marketing distributors never sponsor more than 2 people and they never get a check. However, our MLM group was the exception to that rule. I’ll tell you why in “Dirty little secret about MLM # 2.”

Dirty little secret about MLM # 2:

There is ONE feature about the compensation plan that matters above all else.

The network marketing industry promotes infinity pay features, cars, sign up bonuses and front load packages on which you’ll be paid big commissions. Forget all that stuff and forget the company you are looking at if it doesn’t offer the following features.

Why?

It is because the following features build stability in your group and pave the way for relatively easy (and fun) growth of your group.

Can a product user join for free?

If not, run! MLM “gurus” will tell you to promote “the opportunity” (the chance to make big money from home). That is putting the cart in front of the horse! The driving factor in any MLM is the PRODUCT – and the VAST majority of people who join you will (initially) be primarily (if not totally) interested in getting and using the product.

Are the products competitively priced?

As you can see from the paragraph above, if the price of the products is “out of school” you will be out of luck because no one will continue to buy a product that has a crazily high price tag.

Assuming the products are fairly priced and they work, you still need insurance against eventual competition.

That “insurance” is the mouth of your product using customers. Many of your product users will tell you, “I don’t want to do the business.” However, people love to tell others about the good things they find. Once they have a friend wanting the product, they WILL (in many cases) contact you to get help signing up their friend.

If the company you are looking at makes it easy for product users to sign up a friend – and the company will pay them for that, you will be building on a solid foundation.

If the company insists that product users become a representative to get paid, run! However, if the company has a system that allows a product user to overcome their monthly product cost by signing up a few friends – that is the basis of a winning combination.

Why? When a product user over comes the monthly cost of the product they are using, they are “bullet proof” because all competition is eliminated – they won’t ever find the product somewhere else for free… and some will be converted to business builders at the micro level and a few at the mega level.

The logic goes like this:

Product user: “If I can get my product for free by signing up a few product user friends, what could I do if I became a distributor and started treating this like a business?”

We had many people making $300, $600, $1,500 $6,000 and more a month who started out as pure product users. The key is to help product users like they matter (because they matter MOST).

The only thing better is if a product user gets a check (no matter how small) after signing up just one friend who orders – again, this is because 80% of networkers never ever get any check. Just getting any check (or electronic payment) is shocking for most people.

How did we sponsor 300 people and build a stable group?

In our former MLM experience, it was the above features which allowed us to sponsor 300 who became 10,000 people – the vast majority being product users or small builders. Out of 300 people sponsored, only a few were hard charging heavy hitters.

Dirty little secret about MLM # 3:

As you can see, the vast majority of our former group were product users – many who became micro builders, typically making $300 a month.

What is the 3rd dirty secret about this?

The network marketing industry guides you to go after existing network marketers. The problem is that many existing network marketers are victims of the “next shiny object” syndrome – they fly like a parrot to the next shiny bobble in networking.

Product users come from the general public.

They are NOT looking for a network marketing gig! They don’t know what you are talking about. On the other hand, 7 out of 10 people on the street (and online) want to know about a hot new product. We (you and I – the general public) are always interested in hot new products, aren’t we? Were you interested when the first iPhone came out? We were.

So it follows – building your network marketing business by gathering product users is the way to go. MLMers are NOT doing that – they take what they THINK is “the easy road” – they think they’ll sponsor “seasoned network marketers.”

It is a huge and often repeated mistake. Take the path of sponsoring network marketers and you’ll be in for a lot of rejection and you’ll have a hard time building stability.

Conclusions:

Life is about taking calculated risks. Business is about taking calculated risks without risking a lot of money to start. Don’t spend any money for a while on any company you join. Join for free and check it out. Ask people you know for their opinion. If everything feels good, take the next step and order the product. If you get results, consider “doing the business.”

The redeeming factor about network marketing is exactly that – no to low start up cost. Don’t bet the house. There is not another business model on the planet that offers so much upside for so low an investment – and offers very little down side risk.

Again, we were MAD that our network marketing company because it didn’t last – but neither did our real estate office last. The BIG difference? We KNOW the amount of money we earned net from MLM.

We also knew the pain and financial loss from conventional business when the real estate market shifted – it was not pretty. AND we didn’t get 3 years to play and do anything we wanted to do while we operated a conventional business!

This may sound like an outlandish claim, but this is not the high end of what top producers in the network marketing industry are making. This is just a number based on what many of you aspiring top producers would like to make to feel very successful with your MLM business, and to feel comfortable with their future.

Last night I was blessed to meet with Mr. Mark Yarnell, a legendary figure in network marketing. He revealed to me how to earn $100,000 per year your first year in MLM, and within that conversation the “10 landmines to avoid” that will destroy your chances of doing so. Today we are going to cover what you have to do, or “How To Earn $100,000 A Month Your 1st Year” in your MLM home business.

Mark Yarnell, the source of these awesome MLM success secrets, has made more than $30 MILLION in this industry, so he has at least a leg or two to stand on. I. Ask yourself, “Would I recruit my mom into this company”?

  • If your core values do not align with your vehicle, you WILL sabotage yourself before you get to the big money & success. It can not be just about the money.

II. You need to look at the size & potential of the market sector your company and products are in.

IV. Decide to get to $100,000 per month. Decide how long you will take to get there – One, Two or Three Years.

  • Based on 20 days per month, you need to present to 30 qualified prospects per day, to get to $100,000 per month in one year.
  • Based on 20 days per month, you need to present to 20 qualified prospects per day, to get to $100,000 per month in two years.
  • Based on 20 days per month, you need to present to 10 qualified prospects per day, to get to $100,000 per month in three years.
  • With anything less than 10 people per day, & you reach a point of diminishing returns. Decide on one, two or three years to get to $100,000 per month.

If you want to get there in one year, as we discussed in the title of this post, you have to get your presentation in front of 30 qualified prospects per day.

Now, if you’re like me, the thought of creating a plan sounds about as fun as drinking bleach. But I discovered a simple method of business planning that has made a major difference for me and my team. So how do you do it? It’s simple. Here are four steps to help you create a one page business plan that can make the difference between success and failure in your business. I recommend you create a new business plan every single month, analyzing the last one to see how it did, then creating a new one for the next month.

1. State your why. You have probably heard that in this game you have to have a strong why. One way I’ve heard it put is, “If your why doesn’t make you cry it’s not strong enough.” So why DO you want a successful online MLM business? Travel, a car you’re proud of, taking care of aging parents, putting kids through college, serving a mission for your church, changing your zip code” whatever it is for you, write it down.

2. Set your goals. I create a business plan at the beginning of every month, so I always set a monthly goal. Some months I set financial goals, other times goals for a certain number of recruits. This month for example my company has an incentive for everybody that recruits 10 or more people, so that’s my goal. Everybody’s goals are different and personal, the key is to have a goal and write it down!

3. List the prospecting method you are going to use, the system you need for that method, and your budget. For example, let’s say my budget for marketing this month is $200. I have three columns on my business planning worksheet, “Prospecting Method”, “System”, and “Budget”. Under the Prospecting Method column I might list E-mail marketing and Pay Per Click. The system I use for autoresponse marketing is My Direct Connections, an all in one marketing/ list management/ autoresponse tool. For Pay Per Click I might choose Google. Then I can set my budget for each one. My Direct Connections costs $39.95 a month, that leaves about $160, so I can spend $80 on autoresponder e-mail leads (I pay 3 cents for mine, so I’ll get about 2,666 leads), and $80 on PPC. I then have an area for tracking, simply titled “Results”, where I write down the results from each method. My goal is to spend $50 or less per sign up. Industry experts generally agree that if your marketing costs are below $50 per person you can create duplication and build a massive, successful downline.

4. Write out your follow up methods. You have probably heard the saying, “The fortune’s in the follow up.” Well, your business plan needs to list your follow up method. For me, I consider every single visitor to my web-site like a visitor to my store. Now, the reason I use the internet to prospect is because I don’t want to run out side my “store” yelling at passers by to come in and shop. That’s how MLM worked before the internet. I just want to talk to people that are interested, and have already been to my store. So once they come to my site, if they don’t join automatically, I list my follow up methods, in this case:

1. Send a personally written e-mail.

2. Send a personally written short autoresponse follow up campaign.

3. Introduce myself on the phone.

4. Send them a simple info package in the mail.

So the four steps to creating a simple business plan are:

1. Write down your Why.
2. Set monthly goals.
3. Choose a prospecting method, system, and budget, then track results.
4. State your follow up method.

This simple business plan, if followed, will result not just in personal success, but help you create duplication in your organization. And when somebody in my team is struggling, I simply ask them about their plan. They usually don’t have one, which is often why they are struggling. The people on my team that have a plan and are executing it aren’t having struggles in their business, they are having success!

Did you know that there is a way you can get free advertising using the web’s top search engine Google? 1. Set goals. You must figure out where you want to be in two to five years from now. You must think about ways people find an find you. With any network marketing internet home based-business opportunity especially, it takes time to build a frontline with strong leaders; leaders who will retail and bring in other leaders for their teams. This does NOT happen overnight. It takes work. If you see promotions from others where they seemed to have skipped this step, there are three possible reasons:

b. They previously had a large downline and just transferred it into a new company.

c. The person has good name recognition. So, a MLM company asked them to promote their company, and gave them a huge downline. The heavy hitter than began to advertise for them.

Writing articles is the best way to get listed on the #1 page in Google. Article marketing really must be part of your plan. So, how do you go about doing this?

*Figure out what is popular in your niche. For example, what are people looking for and talking about related to network marketing? What are the most viewed articles in places such as EzineArticles.com? Just browsing through related categories and the most viewed and popular articles can give you a good idea. What you see will let you know what to write about. You can also use material from any ebooks and other resource that you have. You also can hire people through places such as Elance.com if the thought of writing an article sounds overwhelming.

*After you figure out what people want, do a keyword research related to your topic. This will help you discover how to get free mlm traffic. Focus on long tail keyword phrases which are 3 words or more. Phrases such as internet marketing, mlm, networking marketing will never get you on the first page of Google since there is way to much competition or those keywords. A phrase such as free mlm resources” likely will get you better results.

*Use a keyword tool to help you and to save time. Wordtracker is excellent as well as Google’s free tool, Good Keywords, etc.

*Once you figure out your keyword, put it in quotes and then go to Google to see how many searches there are for it. As mentioned before, huge results such as 40,000-50,000 will get you nowhere. Go for results 5,000 or under.

*Once you have found the long tail keyword phrase you want to use, use the exact phrase in the title, and first and last paragraph of your article.

*Submit your article to EzineArticles.com . Of course, there are other directories you can as well such as article marketer.com which is a free distribution service. Once you have submitted your article, in a week do a Google search to see where you landed. If you don’t like the page you are on, you can go back and make changes to get better results.

* In your resource book, add a link to your blog or unique splash page where you are branded. It is best if it is unique and different especially if you are in MLM where everybody uses a generic splash page.

Starting Your Home Based Business With MLM Prospecting and Generating Leads

Starting your own home based business can be hard, never easy. You always need money to pay your bills, and things just don’t happen for you very easily in terms of getting unique visitors, them turning into leads, converting those leads into prospects and then actual clients, and then enrolling them into your primary business. All of this while trying to pay your bills. It’s hard for a person whether they are single or whether they have a big family to support so I won’t talk about that. What a lot of people don’t realize is that business expenses are 100% tax deductible, but that doesn’t make it free, especially if you’re not earning any money. So most people that start with a home based business do so while having a job or do so from savings as a big investment.

They are many types of home based businesses and most of them, I mean besides the kind that are there for stuffing envelopes, require the use of a telephone or more often the computer with an internet connection. All home based businesses pay you for how much processing or prospect conversions that you do.

This is especially true with a Network Marketing or MLM home based business. So how do you get your unique visitors to come to you? How do you turn those unique visitors into leads? Of course pay per click marketing is very expensive, and seldom people can afford this at first unless you’re already making money with your online business. But to find a good keyword phrase with little competition use Google’s, Google AdWords: Keyword Tool. Just Google that phrase on Google and you’ll find it.

But before I get into more trends, I have to establish that if you’re going to have an online business, what you need is a lead capture page and an email auto-responder so people can subscribe to your newsletter and it helps you keep track of your leads. Now if your great with computer technology you can get a very affordable domain name with GoDaddy and host it for less than $4 per month using HostGator but then you have to really understand html and create a programming environment where every time someone clicks somewhere on your page that, that information is tracked, stored, and processed using some type of program environment tool. Most people that have a home based online business or are interested in having one are not savvy enough with computers, much less savvy when it comes down to html and especially programming. Things like cgi scripting, perl scripting, php, asp, java, java scripting, etc. What most people need is a capture page that already has everything set up and running for you. A capture page that lets you sit back, relax, and see exactly what is going on with your online campaign. This isn’t going to cost you $4 dollars per month. If you want all these tools available to you you’re going to have to find something a lot more technologically practical, useful, convenient, sound, and concrete; and yet still at an affordable price. Say for under $50 per month? I personally recommend this site. It’s called lead system pro and it automates a lot of or all of the things necessary to effectively host a web capture or lead page and allowing you to track your visitors and doing a whole bunch of other cool things, basically also giving you a back office where you can manage and edit your site and content without any knowledge of html or web based programming. You could also take advantage of a whole bunch of Web 2.0 applications that are all free and link them into your capture page. Applications such as youtube, MySpace, Facebook, twitter, and more are covered in the tutorial section with step by step video guidance in lead system pro. The company also has recorded webinars or phone/computer seminars that are pre-recorded that you can watch or listen to so you can take examples from what others already know and apply it to your own site(s) and business and market that way.

You’ll also need some type of advertising that you can do about every 3 days or so in order to get consistent traffic coming to your site. I know about two services which cost about $200 each for 1 year and I think that, that is a great offer. But for now, let’s get back to more trends. How do you turn those unique visitors to turn into leads? Leads are people that opt-in or sign up for your newsletter, an interested market, that put in their real name, email, and phone number and automatically get put on your auto-responder newsletter. If you’re worried about the auto-responder newsletter, don’t be, lead system pro has all of that built in and taken care of so you don’t have to write a thing to your list unless you want to. Once a person is a lead, there’s no cold calling, no hunting people down, no convincing other people or telling them about your business. And I’ll show you how.

You need to create Your own unique selling position – study your competition to find out what they emphasize about the product which makes them stand out from the crowd or their niche that you want to compete in. Then decide on something that will make your business unique from the others. It could be something unique about the product, the service, or you, or you could choose a more highly defined target market. You need to build and promote your web site – to develop a profitable web site for your niche product you need to create a number of informative pages that will not only attract visitors from the search engines, but inform and move them to purchase from your site.

Define Your Purpose – Without a clear purpose for your site, you will not know where you are heading, for example, to help small business owners attain a presence on the web to sell their product or service. Now, write down the statement of purpose for your web site. Go over it a few times to make sure it is crystal clear, then write an article and/or make a video. Otherwise your unique visitors will be trying to figure it out for themselves.

Realize many others may be competing to sell the same product. Focus on something unique you may have to offer, that stands out from your competitors. If you are setting up a company, make sure it is a reputable company with a good track record with lots of help available from others involved, such as your upline, partners, coaches, mentors, etc. Don’t recklessly jump in – you will waste a lot of time and money. This is the number one reason, why many entrepreneurs give up so quickly and basically fail.

You have to have to put on your customers shoes. Make a thumb nail sketch of this person – who is your customer? What is his/her wants, needs and worries? Try to understand what makes them tick. Then you can understand what gain you can offer and what worry you can solve. This is the only way to gain trust or confidence in your customer so that they will buy from you in a very competitive market.

Develop your product that addresses one or more of these needs. Always refer back to your thumbnail sketch as you write for your site. Elaborate on the points that fit your product and what it delivers. As you start writing, new ideas will naturally emerge, but always keep them focused on your targeted customer so you won’t go off the track of what your customer wants. Remember, to sell to your customer you have to have their wants and needs in mind.

Maybe you have seen the ads, “Get 10,000 visitors to your site, for only $20”. Wow, you think, that’s a great bargain, I’ll go for it. The result – 10 people visiting your site and no one buying. What do you do?

Write Your Copy to Sell – When you begin to write the copy for your site, always stress the benefits. Develop a theme for your site that focuses on this benefit and don’t stray from it.

Also, make your customer want to click through to the next page or click through to your order page.

Now, that you have identified your targeted customer and written copy tailored to solving your customers’ problems, you will no longer lose those that you have driven to your site.

More realistically put, to turn a unique visitor into a lead, as mother said, you only get one chance to make a first impression – and that’s the one that sticks. What she didn’t say was that when it comes to web sites, not only must it create a good impression, it must be effective.

Your web site has two choices. It can choose to sit quietly in the corner like a wimp, or it can engage with visitors, make contact, and do business. Not much different to a real world encounter when you think about it. If you have something to offer, you either go out and tell people about or sit home and get ignored. And guess which web site does more business – the inactive wimp or the pro-active go-getter?

But there’s a problem. To interact online, you have to have some way of establishing contact with your visitor. Most importantly, finding out who they are, what they need and when they need it. I use the term pro-active. To me web sites that just sit there and wait for visitor requests or signs of interest are re-active [aka: wimps]. They do nothing until poked by the visitor. Pro-active web sites poke the visitor – in the nicest possible way, of course! It is vital your web site finds a way to engage your visitors again in the future.

You must always give in order to receive. The better quality you give, the more you receive. It is a universal law of nature established long before the Internet or probably even the dinosaurs. Provide a *quality* ‘something’ to you visitors in exchange for the ability to contact them. Then treat this exchange with the care and respect it deserves and, sooner or later, that visitor will become your client. It may take days, maybe months, but sooner or later, when they have a real need of what you provide, they will come to you and ask for it – guaranteed. You won’t have to sell it. They will want to buy it.

A good example of this is building that email list and writing articles for your leads to read on a weekly basis, sort of like a newsletter, adding value and insight, not just promoting what you can do for them but also helping them to solve a want or need as well.

Thousands of people may visit your site every day. This is totally futile unless you help them to help themselves. Help them remember you by offering articles, newsletters, RSS feeds, Blogs, Videos or whatever does it for you. There are many avenues you can choose from. Whichever you choose, don’t just have your web site sit there in the corner looking pretty – and doing nothing. Make it work for its living.

You invested time, effort and probably money in putting your website up. Make it earn its keep – it owes you that. Ensure it greets the visitor, what you do, have plenty of attractive and useful content, but above all else, ensure you make all efforts to get your visitor’s calling card/email address before they leave your web site.

I think by now you’ve got the general idea. We’ve also covered how do you get them as prospects who are interested in your company or product.
