Multiculturalism in America

Multiculturalism is nothing but multiple cultures living in the same society in an organized manner. People from different countries, ethnicity, traditions and backgrounds live and work together. This amazing feature is an important part of American society.

Many people from different countries started immigrating to the US in the 19th century. However, multiculturalism began in the US in the 1950s when the Civil Rights Movement started. This movement played a crucial part in highlighting issues such as inequality, discrimination and oppression. People started putting pressure not just on the government, but also on social institutions to treat them as equal. Figures such as George Washington Carver, William James and Charles H. Wesley were responsible for encouraging multiculturalism in the US. They all believed in living in a plural society that treated everyone at par and as equals.

The US has always proudly allowed people freedom to practice their own religion and express their thoughts. Regardless of culture, people are allowed equal opportunities. Today, the US has a vast number of Hispanics and Asians living there, and to have an egalitarian society, the people have to be willing to accept multiculturalism as part of their society.

The fastest growing group in the US is that of the Asian-Americans and Hispanics. The federal government has strict laws to promote an equal society and as a result of so many different cultures living in one place, America has truly become a melting pot of cultures. Minorities, Native Americans, African-Americans and immigrants from all corners of the world live harmoniously together forging a deeper bond.

As aspect of American society has had a deeper effect. There is a demand across the board that people from all walks of life should be able to enjoy equal rights. Hence, different communities and intellects came together to demand for rights for oppressed groups like lesbians, gays, the downtrodden and seniors.

In the education sector, no discrimination is allowed and child from all ethnicities and cultures are allowed to enter any education institution. Even in business and industry sectors, people are given rights for equal participation regardless of their backgrounds.

While there are some drawbacks to multiculturalism, it is the pros that one should always concentrate on. A society should not be discouraged to absorb people from different backgrounds.

Pay For College Without Busting Your Retirement Nest Egg

When your salary stops at retirement, will you have enough to pay your bills, travel and live the lifestyle that you want in your Golden Years? Sure, you may be one of the lucky ones with a pension. Social Security may even still be around. But if you want to live your vision of retirement, then saving and investing properly is important. And how you pay for college for your kids will impact your own retirement. Think about this: College tuition, books, fees and housing continue to increase at a rate faster than inflation in general. Based on current trends, the cost of sending just two kids to a private or elite college for a total of eight years will cost more than $360,000 if paid after taxes. This means that those in the 28 percent tax bracket need to earn more than $500,000 in order to meet the costs from cash flow. Regardless of where you send your kids to school, the bottom-line fact is this: How you pay for college impacts how much you save for retirement. For every dollar that you save on college costs means more for your personal retirement down the road.

There are a number of strategies you can use to improve your chances at a better retirement and a solid education at a lower personal cost. There are more than thirteen strategies for increasing needs-based aid. There are at least a dozen cost-cutting ways that any family can use to improve their bottom line. Ultimately, it depends on how well you know how to use the IRS code for your advantage to lower your own Expected Family Contribution (or EFC in financial aid parlance). Regardless of whether you expect to qualify for needs-based aid or not, here are some examples of cost-cutting strategies available to you.

Strategy 1: Get College Credit Through Exams By taking Advanced Placement exams or even a “challenge” exam for basic college courses, a student can get through school quicker potentially saving thousands in tuition and fees. Opportunities are available for Advanced Placement (AP), College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) or DSST exams for 37 different courses. For more information on these, check out the CollegeBoard or search “Get College Credit.”

Strategy 2: Stay Local In-state tuition and fees at a public higher education institution is a bargain compared to the elites and even crossing the border to go to another state’s public college. If you are considering going across the border or away, consider having your child establish residency in that state. Find out what the residency requirement are ahead of time by contacting the admissions office.

Strategy 3: Get the Credit You Deserve from the IRS Use the Hope Education Credit, renamed the “American Opportunity Tax Credit.” This was recently increased to $2,500 (from $1,200) and now applies to all four years of college, not just the first two. In addition, forty-percent of the credit is now refundable. Another helping-hand comes in the form of the Lifetime Learning Credit which is available for one family member and allows you to take up to 40% credit on educational expenses up to $10,000. Income limits apply so be sure to consult a qualified tax professional or visit the IRS website.

Strategy 4: Employ Your Child If you own a business, work as an independent contractor or own rental real estate, consider hiring your child to work for you. Maybe your child can provide administrative support or help with marketing or real estate related chores. By hiring a child and paying him or her, you will lower your own personal taxable income through a business expense deduction and provide income for your child. In addition, the child can use the earnings to open a Roth IRA, a tax-favored retirement account which is not assessed as an asset for financial aid purposes. And if needed, a child can withdraw a portion of the proceeds to pay for qualified educational expenses. There are certain limits and time restrictions that apply.

Strategy 5: Establish a Section 127 Educational Assistance Plan As a business owner you can establish a Section 127 employer-paid tuition benefits program for your employees. This plan allows the business owner to pay up to $5,250 per year to employees (including employed children) as a qualified tax deductible expense. This can be used for both undergraduate and graduate programs of study. Assuming that Junior was going to work in the family business during the summer and throughout the year, Junior can earn a wage (deductible expense for the business) which he can use for his own support and Roth IRA contribution (which may be eligible for paying educational expenses) and earn a tuition benefit (another deductible business expense). If you were going to give the child the money anyway, you may as well structure it to be tax deductible. Consider this: There are more than 110 different other strategies for you to consider. All the more reason to have a coordinated plan in place by speaking with a professional advisor who can help evaluate these options with you. Food for thought:

  • Encourage your pre-teen to open a Roth IRA with earnings from their paper route or other jobs.
  • Consider hiring your child to work in your business or help with chores related to your investment property.
  • Use a CollegeSure CD issued by an FDIC-insured bank to accumulate savings
  • Think about using a fixed income annuity to hold a portion of money for college to avoid the potential loss in principal that can happen with a 529 plan invested in mutual funds.
  • Pursue private and merit-based scholarships (For more information on some of these options, check out Fast Web, the CollegBoard and the Scholarship Experts or the Scholarship Coach on the web.

Internet Network Marketing – Building It By The Numbers

Internet Network marketing has changed over the years from the outdated archaic methods to the high technology methods used today. One thing that remains the same is building your mlm business by knowing some important numbers. Your financial success depends on knowing these numbers and building your downline using these numbers to guide you.. It is not your companies miracle product. It is not having the best compensation plan in the industry or the most solid company and management team.

We have been lied to in Internet network marketing. You still hear companies and distributors tell people they only have to personally sponsor a few people to build a successful downline. I guess they don’t tell you the truth so they don’t scare you off. The top leaders in our industry will tell you to sponsor 100-120 people in your first year. You have to recruit these numbers to find those 10-15 who will stick with you and build a long term business.

No matter what company, product, or compensation plan you have with your internet network marketing company, people will quit along the way. This is what happens to the average networker. There are those very rare situations where a professional networker recruits a few experienced pros and builds a massive team. This never happened for me or any networkers I know. I teach my team to build with business principals not luck.

The next three numbers changed the way I built my internet network marketing biz. 70-27-3. Your prospects fall into three groups. The 27% group is the answer to building your long term residual income stream. The 70% group is the cause of why most people quit their work at home business. The 3% group will not come in to play for most of us.

The 3% represents that elite group of networking pros or proven traditional business professionals. The bad news is experienced mlm pros will never join with a rookie. Sorry, it’s the truth. The same usually happens with top business professionals. They seek out a proven leader. The good news is we can still build a big downline without them!

The 70% represents the group of people who make a half hearted attempt at your business. Many of these people never do another thing after making their initial order. The traits of these people are no goals, inconsistent in most parts of their life, whine and complain alot, and live life doing the minimum to get by. They will blame you, the company, and the products for their failure. In internet network marketing we build an army of volunteers. Forget these people. This is the reason we do not sell people into our business!

The 27% group is made up of dedicated hard working salt of the earth people. They are not looking at getting rich in the next 30 days. These are the people who expect to learn and do some work to bring extra money into their household. The traits of these people are hard workers all their life, goal setters, involved in their communities and churches, and active lifestyles. This group will build your internet network marketing business. To learn more check out my link in the resource box.

Internal Communication: 12 Essential Elements

There are 12 essential elements of a successful internal communications strategy:

1. Effective employee-directed communications must be led from the top

Effective communications require the active commitment and endorsement of senior managers. It is not enough simply to develop a ‘vision statement’ or formulate in general terms the values by which the company lives. Behaviour is what counts. Managers must be seen to behave in a manner that is consistent with the ethos they are promoting.

2. The essence of good communications is consistency

At all costs, avoid following fashion and tinkering. If you try to improve communications and then fail–because your messages are inconsistent or are ‘good news only’–things will not quietly settle back into the way they used to be. You will inevitably have created expectations, and may have to live with the consequences of having disappointed those expectations.

3. Successful employee communications owe as much to consistency, careful planning and attention to detail as they do to charisma or natural gifts

We might not all be another Zig Ziglar, Tony Robbins or Bill Clinton. But even such communication ‘giants’ slip up if they fail to plan, fail to pay attention to detail and fail to project a consistent message.

4. Communication via the line manager is most effective

‘ Line Manager to employee’ communication is an opportunity for people to ask questions and check that they have understood the issues correctly. However, be aware that business urgency and reality may dictate the need, on many occasions, to inform employees directly rather than relying entirely on the cascade process. (Though managers will still need to answer people’s questions and listen to their views.)

5. Employee communications are not optional extras, they are part of business as usual and should be planned and budgeted for as such

An employee communications plan–key themes, targets, objectives and resources–provides a context in which to deliver initiatives that arise at short notice.

6. There must be integration between internal and external communications

There must be a fit between what you are telling your people and what you are telling your customers, shareholders and public. (By the same token, there must be a fit between what you are telling your people, and what the external media are telling them.)

7. Timing is critical

However clearly expressed and well-presented your message may be, if it arrives at the wrong time you might as well not have bothered. Old news is often worse than no news. Consequently, it is important to ensure that the channels you use can really deliver at the time you need them to.

8. Tone is important

Expressing overly-gushing enthusiasm about a technical change of little real significance to your staff or public at large is scarcely calculated to make people take your message to heart. If they don’t take that message to heart, why would they take the rest of what you say to their bosoms?

9. Never lose sight of the ‘what’s in it for me?’ factor

We are self-interested creatures. I may have invented the most amazing gadget ever, but unless I get you emotionally involved you are never likely to listen to my message about it. But if I can show you how my gadget will revolutionise your life, add dollars to your wallet, free up your time, fix your smelly feet, wash your car for you, stop your kids arguing with you, bring peace with your spouse, bring world peace…

10. Communication is a two-way process

Employee communications are NOT a one-way information dump. Capturing feedback is of critical importance, and if you are not seen to be listening and acting on what you are told, why should people bother telling you?

11. A single key theme or a couple of key themes is a means of giving coherence to a range of diverse employee communications initiatives

In recent years, the overriding theme of many corporate employee communications has been the impact on the business of competition, regulation and economic forces. Many messages and initiatives can therefore be evaluated according to the light they shed on one or more of these key themes.

12. Set your standards and stick to them

Determine which channels should be mandatory and which should be optional; establish quality standards for all channels and review these at least annually.

Errors to Avoid in Forex Trading

Forex trading is the exchange of currencies from one hand to another in the currency market. Investment companies do this as well as banks but individuals can also play the currency trade through buying and selling. You buy at a lower price and then sell it or exchange it for a much higher rate of conversion.

Forex trading however can be a risky business to get into but once you get the hang of it, it an yield you a lot of gains. All you need to do is minimize your risks and errors in this volatile business and you are on your way to a bit of financial freedom.

Here are some of the mistakes that people make when they trade currencies. Read each one before you get into forex trading.

1. Never blindly trust people

No matter how good they supposedly are and no matter how great their credentials are in forex trading, there is still some room for mistakes. In fact, some people in the industry who have years of experience get too cocky and lose money in the process. If you are serious about going into forex trading, you must know the business yourself. You must also understand how the system works and be able to follow why a currency appreciates and depreciates. That way, you won’t just rely on the advice of people but also be able to make your own analysis and decisions.

2. Never rely on news

News may claim to be facts but often these are just one perspective or from one chunk of the bigger picture. If you want to really know about the business, do not rely on the news. Rely on your own analysis and then compare them to other peoples analysis in newspapers and television. That way, you will learn the business on your own. Besides, you should not believe everything you hear or read.

3. Buying low and then selling high

Although this is the theory for forex trading, this does not mean that you should wait for a currency to become really low, buy it and then wait again for it to recover and surge at higher rates. This is not the way to do it. Forex trading involves a much faster exchange of currencies. Buy low and then sell when it gains a point. You don’t have to wait for a peak to do it.

Seven Ways to Empower Women Into Business Enterprises

In 2008, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) reported that 52,000 Nigerian women were dying annually due to pregnancy and child-birth related complications. In more comprehensible terms, the number translates to 145 women per day.

Population is a critical asset for any nation, with far-reaching social, political and economic consequences. In Nigeria, it also happens to be a controversial issue because of regional, inter-state and ethnic ramifications. Its dwindling female population however has consequences that go much beyond the immediately obvious effect of a rapidly skewing sex ratio. Nigeria has ambitious rapid development plans to take it to the top twenty world economies by 2020. The eventual success of this endeavor is inextricably linked to entrepreneurial performance, as well as to the management of its womenfolk who comprises close to half its total human resource.

Although there are dissenting voices on the subject, it is widely accepted that women in Nigeria are systematically discriminated against, harassed and abused at home and work, and suffer violent crimes and unequal treatment both within their homes and outside. Deep-set regressive and repressive practices have led to unabated misery for Nigerian women in various forms: social inferiority, economic disempowerment, denial of access to property and inheritance, sexual abuse, trafficking and proliferation of HIV/AIDS.

A 2000 World Bank study titled ‘Can Africa Claim the 21 Century’ sets forth two fundamental premises that hold especially true for Nigeria2:

* Gender inequality is both an economic and a social issue.

* Greater gender equality could be a potent force for accelerated poverty reduction in Africa.

Given the acute poverty situation in Nigeria – where close to 76 million are officially classified as poor and 54% of the citizenry live on less than $1 per day – women’s empowerment and their worthwhile inclusion in the development processes is key to sustainable growth. The country has huge oil and natural gas reserves that have earned it an estimated $600 billion in the past half a century. However, successive decades of political turmoil and government mismanagement have rendered the vast majority of its people destitute, and left facing multifarious problems arising out of unequal wealth distribution and an extreme divide between rich and poor. Illiteracy, unemployment, rampant crime and organized violence are just a few of the outcomes of this unfortunate situation.

The impact of Nigeria’s history has been particularly severe on its women, leading many to take up traditional, village-level enterprises to eke out a meagre subsistence and supplement family income. The motivation here, importantly, is basic survival – food, clothes, household needs – and not wealth creation. Faced with often insurmountable circumstantial challenges, individual and groups of women entrepreneurs have traditionally held on to extremely small scale ventures in the manufacturing and services sectors, largely without any organizational support or guidance.

Curiously, this sad state of affairs is simultaneously an attribute that offers policy makers a substantial if dormant advantage. By virtue of their involvement in cottage and village level enterprises, Nigerian women are already an active entrepreneurial group with uncharted economic and human resource potential. To perhaps overtly simplify, all they need is a policy-level nudge in the right direction to help them capitalise on their accrued talents to bring about exhaustive development across the battered landscape of their country.

The fate of both Nigeria’s 2020 target and Millennium Development Goals hinges substantially on its ability to drive an entrepreneurial revolution that suitably develops and taps the latent abilities of its massive female population. The following are 7 creative proposals that could make it happen:

1. Introducing legal reforms to ensure equal rights of women to ownership, inheritance and financial control; with a view to reinforcing their special skills and advantages and leveraging them for immediate and long-term macro-economic gains, at both local and national levels.

2. Re-prioritising budgetary outlays and official expenditure models with the specific objective of improving gender equality, through the introduction of special schemes and programs that effectively encourage women’s involvement in entrepreneurial activities.

3. Enforcing equitable gender participation through the development of focused entrepreneurial activity for women that takes their socio-cultural, legal and economic constraints into account. Policy changes must be initiated to overcome hurdles in the gainful involvement of women in viable enterprises.

4. Initiating government incentive programs for existing and emerging enterprises that proactively involve women in different hierarchies. Educating present and future entrepreneurs on the unique business and social advantages they stand to derive from this dynamic group.

5. Facilitating partnerships between women and financial, advisory and support agencies; in a way that compensates for their lack of formal business acumen, experience and access to funding. Fostering partnerships between women entrepreneurs in related sectors to help share expertise and resources.

6. Instituting effective start-up and ongoing support structures with safety net provisions to provide continuous financial, technical and know-how assistance and minimize failure rates. Ensuring ground level efficacy of such measure through continuous monitoring and survey.

7. Enhancing accountability on women empowerment issues at both state and federal government levels through unbiased assessment of executive agencies and relevant state-sponsored programs. Suitably highlighting achievements and deficiencies to enable constructive evolution of such practices.

In terms of subjective ground reality, these suggestions are by no means definitive or exhaustive; however, they do hold up the broad framework that any substantial policy redirection must incorporate in order to achieve the sustainable and accelerated economic growth Abuja has projected. Localized adaptation is necessary for each guideline in order to suitably address historical and regional imperatives. Further, there is a considerable amount of introspection and groundwork that must be undertaken before these parameters can be put in place. Basic human development initiatives, especially those related to easy and universal access to health care and modern education, are paramount. Nigeria has inherited a broad spectrum of fundamental deficiencies concerning infrastructure, logistics and power that have to be sufficiently addressed beforehand. There are additional and considerable risks attending to policy changes that have to be both acknowledged and anticipated.

For the purpose of encouragement, what Nigerian leaders and policy makers would perhaps do well to take heart in is an old aphorism: one that says you invest in the entire community when you invest in women!

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Social responsibility is the theory that every entity has a duty towards the common good of society at large, in order to maintain a balance between economy and ecology. This responsibility can be at an individual or organizational level, but the idea is to give as much good back to the world that we live in, as we take from it.

Economic development has always been seen as a trade-off between sustaining the world we live in and improving the economic climate, more so in urban societies where commerce seems to override the health of the environment. However, this need not be the case. With social responsibility, we can find ways of sustaining a balance between the two by either not engaging in acts that are harmful to the environment (passive) or working towards the advancement of social goals (active).

Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR refers to the efforts of a profit-making organization or business establishment, in the area of social betterment. The World Business Council for Sustainable Development defined CSR in one of it’s publications, as “… the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as the local community and society at large”. It is often argued that CSR comes directly in the way of an establishment’s fundamental role of economic growth and profit making. However, it is clear that economic growth can only take us so far in a world where human, animal and environmental welfare takes a backseat. CSR is now a vital organ in the machinery of most established organizations the world over.

Similarly, Student Social Responsibility (SSR) and Individual Social Responsibility (ISR) are also viewed to hold both positive and negative repercussions to a society. Should an individual focus on self-interest alone or the larger interests of the community? Should a student concentrate on succeeding purely in academic pursuits, or does he or she benefit from being involved in the welfare of the society? The answer is simple: there is no individual gain when the community suffers; the fruits of one’s academic excellence hold no value when a society isn’t functioning optimally.

To this end, it is up to the individual or the organization to choose an area of social responsibility that they believe they are most suited to contribute towards. A good example of best practices in social responsibility and sustainability comes from Levi Strauss. The company came under fire from Greenpeace for its clean water practices at some of its manufacturing plants in Mexico. Levi’s made an open pledge on its site to work towards this weakness. By re-thinking water consumption at every stage of production, the company now has a new line of jeans, which uses up to 96% less water during the production cycle.

Limitations of the Internet radio advertising

  • Anybody can simply modify your ad and use the same for their purpose. Since these ads are of very short duration, you need to condense your ad without sacrificing its content.
  • Radio ads may have noises appearing in the background, prompting you to run your ad more frequently to make it effective for your prospective clients.
